A long shot, but Queen of the South's young manager is worth a look. All you need to do is look at the league (scottish L2) and know that he came in after last season, with no money and has bought through a spine of young players. Saw them play once early in the season: 4-4-2, wingers, passing game. They're still playing that in March (which in Scotland is no mean feat). When they played Arbroath at home, they were a man and a goal down at half time. The manager decided to switch it around a bit and they won 5-1. Now that's good management...

[ Glass half empty ] I'd be worried about the fact they were a man down, what sort of manager allows such indiscipline? [ / Glass half empty]

We've been through this, and others have much better history or access to statistics than me, but the list of Wilder's transfers and loans is very long and the hit rate is pretty damn poor. Montrose, McGinty, Boateng, Kerrouche, Johnson, Wilson, Philiskirk, Montano, Sangare, Hackney, Futcher, Franks, Baker, Chalmers, Grant, Fowler, Rhys Day, Sodje, Franny Green, Sandwith, Sappleton, Killock ... doesn't make for good reading.

And Mussolini made the trains run on time (which is not actually true...)

It's not just bringing in the duffers, it's playing his new 'favourite toy' at the expense of the genuine stars who've shown real commitment to the team, and then persisting with them long after their duffness is obvious to their team-mates, the fans, and worst of all, the opposition.

Paul Sturrock moves to the out of work category - can we forgive a season down the A420?

His views on this current season (sound familiar???)

THE TIME HAS COME NOT ONLY FOR A NEW MANAGER BUT FOR A COMPLETE NEW COACHING SET UP .
BRIAN MACDERMOTT AS MANAGER WITH RICHARD HILL AS NUMBER TWO WITH FORMER READING PLAYERS ADIE VIAVASH AND NICKY FORSTER AS COACHES . GET THEM IN NOW TO ACCESS PLAYERS AND DECIDE ON CHANGES REQUIRED FOR NEXT SEASON .

Ah yes, not one, not two, but three ex-OUFC players - plus the Dad (or is it step-Dad?) of another thrown in for good measure - mentioned all in one proposal!

What on earth makes you think Brian McDermott would step down from Div 1 to Div 4, when it's generally accepted that he did pretty well in his last job? And more to the point, who the hell is going to pay his wages? Because OUFC sure can't afford them.

Being realistic, my choices would be:

Mark Yates
Tisdale
Edgar Davids
Justin Edinburgh

McDermott would not want to come here as it appears thta he is hoping for the Ireland job.

THE COST OF A NEW MANAGER AND COACHING STAFF IS NOT THE CONCERN AT OXFORD BUT THEFACT THAT IF CHANGES
ARE NOT MADE IN MANAGEMENT COACHING AND PLAYERS OXFORD MAY WELL BE BACK ASA NON LEAGUE CLUB SO THE MONEY HAS TO BE FOUND

REMEMBER NO OXFORD FAN WOULD NEVER HAVETHOUGHT OF JIM SMITH AS OXFORD MANAGER SO WHY NOT OFFER MACDERMOTT THE JOB TILL THE END OF THE SEASON THEN BOTH PARTIES CAN REVIEW POSITION .

OXFORD UNITED MUST AIM HIGHER OR THEY WILL FALL LOWER

I would bet thta McDermott would not want to come to Oxford especially until the end of the season. Ireland are supposedly looking at him when current manager leaves. I suspect that there is still negotiations going on at Reading re Mcdermott's pay off.

And WHY have a new manager just untilt he end of the season (and then get another one when he goes elsewhere).

Surely the club should go throguh an interview process and try and get the best person when the time comes??

That's easy for you to say isn't it? We lost hundreds of thousands of pounds this season, and simply can't afford to pay Premier League wages to get a decent manager in. Football (and specifically the money paid to top managers) has changed beyond belief in the last 30 years, so the example of Jim Smith is irrelevant. Brian McDermott will still be enjoying the fruits of his contract at Reading, and will have offers on the table come the summer. Why would he want to join a Div 4 club for a few weeks? He'll be keeping up with what's going on in higher divisions and enjoying some time on the golf course.

As far as I can tell, Davids is working for nothing at Barnet. He gets managerial experience, they get someone as manager they could never otherwise afford. I cannot believe he would move to another club on the same deal, nor do I find it plausible he would want to leave anyway just now - unless, possibly, Barnet go down. Since, therefore, any move away from Barnet is likely only to be after he has shown at least some competence as a manager, I am guessing there will be plenty of clubs willing to pay for his services. I would also expect plenty would be willing to pay rather more than we could afford - except, of course, in Shouty Steve's strange parallel universe where cost does not matter and money - presumably literally - grows on trees.

On a different issue - with the likes of Mark Yates, would we be a big enough attraction to tempt away incumbent managers from their present jobs? We do not need to re-visit the thread which sought to determine where in Division 4 our playing budget might come, but I guess our Chairman's current willingness to stick by CW and not fire him at the first hint of dissent might be appealling to some, as and when either the axe falls or CW is himself tempted away by another club?

Mooro wrote:Although it seems that the board have decided not to put Mr Wilder out of his (our?) misery for now, I thought I'd have a look round at who the possible candidates might be when the time comes (largely based on those names that appear on bookies list for other vacancies). I've tried to ignore those unemployed managers who would not consider coming down to L2.

Remembered I did this, so went for a look back and it makes an interesting list.
The above was the list of usual suspects that were being linked with most jobs that were going at the time, so would probably have been linked with us:
Of those in the out of work/available section: Curle, Dowie, Jackson, McCallister & Sturrock have not taken any role since, Cooper is still assistant at Ross, while Houston has just taken up a scouting role at Celtic having been out of the game for a year. Only Dickov has made a stab at another managerial role.

Of the in-work list - Tisdale, Edinburgh, Yates, Morrell and Rowett are all still in place & contention this time, with Edinburgh's stock rising and Morrell falling. Tilson quit after a year at Canvey Island, Irvine is still at the Everton Academy while Lee has fallen off the radar. Only Johnstone has moved onwards and upwards, and has Kilmarnock 8th in the Scottish Premier.
Neil Aspin meanwhile has achieved a third successive promotion with Halifax and has them sitting 8th in the Conference.

And of the Oxford list - Fordie is still Fordie, Bradbury is midtable Conf south with Havant & Waterlooville, Penney is now asst to Brown at Southed and Foyle is in the Conference with Hereford (P Vale 04-07 37% WR, York 08-10 43%, Hereford from May12 39% finishing 6th last season, but currently 15th).

Not sure what this says, except that the bookies list of usual suspects is wholly unreliable.....
