Thinking about how we might line up in the new season
I hope that the fact that our defence has been strengthened (and I'll leave comments about Duberry until he kicks a ball in August), means that we can see Batt play on the right of a midfield 4 with JPP on the left.
I fear however that CW will continue with 4-3-3 which means we will still get outmuscled in midfield by the stronger teams - Stevenage the obvious example last season.
I appreciate that with the new signings (and possibly one or two to come) we have more flexibility now (5-3-2 with Dubery in the middle of the back 3 anyone?) but my preference would be as follows with subs in brackets:-
Clarke
(new)
Capaldi
Wright
Dubery
Whing
(Purkiss, Worley)
JPP
Smalley
McLaren (Chapman after Xmas?)
Batt
(Heslop, Payne, Potter)
Beano running the channels more right than left to give JPP room.
Craddock playing centre.
(Woodley)
Interested to see what others think.

You've forgotten Ryan James, Antony Tonkin and Asa Hall. Also Purkiss is I think available for transfer, and Wilder has said he thinks everyone who is made available (so including Green and Kinniburgh as well) will find another club rather than sit out their contracts.
Batt I don't think will be in midfield, and Smalley is a striker.

Very interesting, and quite a lot of fun!
Of course it's largely speculation until the final make-up of the squad is known, and we all always suppose that all signings will come off well (not always the case) and that all those on the transfer list will necessary sink without trace (likely but not definite. And have we seen the last of Burge and MacLean? We must assume so.
I would personally be surprised if Smalley plays in the central mid role, and I had assumed he had arrived to give Craddock some competition. And you have confined Hall and Tonkin to the cellars of history wishful, or will Wilder come to appreciate we have probably seen their best days and that they would not befit a promotion standard team?
I think we're two-three signings short of that squad (aside from a GK) one further centre-back and two to compete for the midfield four. Otherwise I pretty much agree with your XI, but hope that it is subject to further change before August!

Wilder says he see a final squad size of 22. I make the squad 19 (without Purkiss). Obviously a reserve goalkeeper is needed. Does Wilder count Chapman in the 22? or Woodley? Was Woodley mainly signed as financial protection because as a non-league team we lost our right to compensation if he had moved once he turned 17?
No Slappy, I haven't forgotten about Tonkin, Hall or James. As those who sit with me know I do not rate Tonkin much and Hall even less. James is a youngster and there are only 7 subs allowed!
I'd give Purkiss a repreive due to his perfomances at the end of the season and his ability to fill in at centre back if necessary.
Smalley can play as a creative/attacking midfielder.

I have heard a few people talking about playing Damian Batt as a right midfielder and I quite like the idea, mainly because I think he is better going forward but he can still defend a bit.
My XI, based on transfers so far....
Clarke,
Whing, Duberry, Wright, Capaldi,
Batt, McClaren, Heslop/Payne, JPP
Constable, Smalley/Craddock
I'd like us to play 4-4-2 with full backs instead of wing backs, thus utilizing the pace on the midfield wings (JPP and Batman). I think Payne has a great future ahead of him and I think he should definitely get a look in next season. I would still like us to buy one more quality midfielder with a lot of league experience. Thoughts anyone?

Obviously it's a bit silly picking our own starting XI before the season starts but it's fun!

This is very interesting, however, I don't really have that much faith in Heslops ability or his consistency. I think we need a much better Heslop, someone who can spray the ball around with pin point accuracy, like an improved Adam Murray, so that smalley and pittman can recieve quality dèlivery running down the flanks.4-2-3-1

Apologies, I misinterpreted the thread as a current squad / starting 11 and formation."Boogie" wrote:No Slappy, I haven't forgotten about Tonkin, Hall or James. As those who sit with me know I do not rate Tonkin much and Hall even less. James is a youngster and there are only 7 subs allowed!

That 4-2-3-1 put forward by Long John Silver sounds pretty tasty! Think it would be a lot like how we play already with JP and Smalley joining in up top and also coming back into wide midfield when we haven't got the ball, but the two sitting midfielders may give a central midfielder a bit more freedom to get forward...
Interesting and obviously hard to say the best team before a ball has been kicked yet, but the team seems as though its coming together nicely!
