So what was the performance like at Torquay?

RO made us sound rubbish.

They were wrong."Hog" wrote:RO made us sound rubbish.
Midson had his best ever game for us.
Craddock's quality shone through - and not just for the goal. Some quality passing.
McLaren looked decent enough.
Hall was pretty decent too.
Still looked dodgy defensively when Torquay came at us - but they are a decent side going forward. At 3-3 there only looked to be one winner. And it wasn't us. But it was.
At times we played some really neat football.
The effort was there today.
Those who missed it - you made a mistake.
What a selection headache for CW next game. Perhaps we have got a strong squad after all.
Few other comments.
From behind the goal we could clearly see that the first Torquay goal was a Tonkin oggie. Not Benyon's. TV footage doesn't clearly show this.
Second Torquay goal should have been cleared by Worley. TV footage clearly shows this. Second game in a row he has failed to get the ball away. Don't blame Clarke for not holding the shot as it took a little deflection.
Potter's contribution to the winner was much better than I had realised on the day.
Torquay play football not a battling attritional midfield game. We usually do better against such teams. They did not have a big strong centre forward. I was going to say that this helped us but given that we conceded three probably best not to.
At the other end of the pitch they did not seem to have big dominant centre halves, or perhaps that is just how Jack made things look.
Torquay stewards we a bit of a pain trying to stop celebrations on the terraces. One actually said they had heard there was going to be trouble. Where do they get this (lack of) intelligence from? Probably the same source that led the landlady of the Union to believe that 7 bus loads of Oxford fans were on the way.

How good is Elliot Benyon?
The rumour is Austin to QPR from Sw*ndon and Benyon to the County Ground.
I missed my first league game this season. The impression I got from listening to the commentary was that Torquay attacked us for fun in the second half and their second and third goals sounded inevitable.
To go on and win the game after those set backs is great testament to the player's belief.

But this is nothing we haven't seen before: Chesterfield and Barnet are both examples of games where we've shown belief."OUFC4eva" wrote:How good is Elliot Benyon?

From the BBC stats, we had six shots on target and two off - they were eleven and seven respectively. Breaking down our shots that would be 25% missed, 25% saved, 50% scored!
The conclusion from that would be that the 'keepers were the big difference between the teams. But I missed the match, and my wife decided to pick the Oxford highlights to start channel-hopping

Enjoy from 1hr.09.05:-

Cool finishing from Jack the Lad.
I take it all back about Craddock's long range efforts lacking conviction.

Indeed. And didn't an awful lot of you miss it! Very disappointing away turn-out for our ONLY away match over the Christmas period. And a bank holiday in Torquay!"Baboo" wrote:Those who missed it - you made a mistake.
The match was good for the neutral (a die-hard Gulls fan even told us how much he'd enjoyed it in the bar after the game), but not the greatest quality. If it showed one thing it's that we're a very mid-table team in this division. We score enough to stay up, but concede far too many to win promotion.
No fewer than 8 changes from the previous game smacked of knee-jerk reactions, and I certainly heard a lot of pre-match mutterings in the pub being none too kind about Wilder's selection policy. By the end his name was being sung non-stop. It's a funny old game.
Midson led the line very well, and showed what he can do as a CENTRE forward. Craddock by contrast looked isolated out wide and didn't get into the game much after his goal, a few nice touches aside. I still don't like our formation, but it created just enough chances yesterday and we took them, for a change.
McLaren did a lot of dirty work in midfield, and certainly made us more competitive generally. I was disappointed (to say the least) by the way we threw away a two-goal lead - their second really showed up our frailties. But amazingly it was us that came up with the winner and not them.
Altogether now - Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells...
This is what I wrote on the proboards site the day before the game for the squad
"Seems like potter is undroppable. Still think he is best coming on late. Replace purkiss with batt and you don't need potter either. Perhaps we should mix things up a bit with craddock up front midson and green supporting him."
Apart from bringing Jake Wright in, were the other seven changes to reflect the poor individual performances by the players against Southend, or a genuine tactical decision? The wholesale rearrangement seemed pre-match like we did against Burton in the cup, just changing for the sake of it.
I really had thought Wilder would never play Midson from the start again unless Constable is injured. They don't seem to play well together, and under normal conditions Constable is the more natural goalscorer and a bit more physical, so will always get picked first. Jack is a bit more flick ons but was great to see him get his hattrick
So do we stick with this front three? I'm wondering if the return of Jack perhaps signals that McLean won't be signing.

Also good to hear "Super, super Tom, super Tommy Craddock"."Kernow Yellow" wrote: No fewer than 8 changes from the previous game smacked of knee-jerk reactions, and I certainly heard a lot of pre-match mutterings in the pub being none too kind about Wilder's selection policy. Award for the worst fan of the day must go to the bloke who yelled out "You're shit Green, just like Wilder".
Best chant, "You should see our first team".
