New Signings

Post by Mooro »

Ok, so the club have not got anyone new in, but looks like Boris has been busy in recent weeks with a number of new faces (or handles) appearing on this forum.

Many of us oldies know each other (or at least pretend to - as I'm sure we often stand/sit next to each other without realising it), but perhaps some of the new faces could introduce themselves......

..in particular Headless pnub, Shoobedoo, RecordMeister &amp more recently Big DAve, hit it eddy, Operation Boarhunt &amp Johnny Byrnes Underpants...

....then we can indulge in a bit of pre-pre-season forum training by making our minds up about your worth purely on your first posting, unearthing mates who post on forums you have previously used who say that you were crap when you were on there, and writing you off as not being as good as a previous poster (&amp particularly not as good as the ones from the good old days of 1986 when it was a proper fanzine).

They could of course be existing users under multiple handles.

Ok fine I'll brave it first.

Not much to say really. Been an OUFC supporter for 15 years. I am currently a season ticket holder (SSL if you're interested), although debating whether to renew (I know I will in the end!).

Oh and this is the first forum I've posted on so I've no history in that regard. Why this forum? I've absolutley no idea to be truthful. Probably because you lot talk more sense on here than on the other boards!

Here we go! As I said before I am new to computing and this is the first forum I have ever joined. Thanks Mooro for giving me the opertunity to introduce myself.I have been sat on the side lines so to speak for the last couple of weeks just watching the action.
It all started in the late 60's .Apparently my old man uses to take me to watch Oxford in my pram. It then progressed to my old man watching and me running around and under the tunnel( it always smelt of piss!) at the Cuckoo lane end.Incidently if you were wandering what happened to the Cuckoo lane end sign, its in my back garden along with the small piece of turf brought from the sale that took place after the final games. The sign was the only thing left the morning after the final game! Those were the days when you could swap ends at half time talk to away fans and watch your team attack at the end you were stood.
It then progressed on to the odd big match, the thrasing by Forests great european side, and being crushed in the London Road (left side).Joining of the London Road travel club run by Mick Brown ( did'nt he do well!). The
trips to venues such as Lincoln,Southend and Bristol Rovers, piss filled beer bottles running down the aisles of the coaches.
And so to the glory years of the 80's ,promotion after promotion. The talk about how many we would win by today whilst walking down Lime Walk. The great cup evenings,Dave Langans overlaps and crosses (remember wingers). His 35 yard goal against Pat Jennings,Manchester United,Leeds, Maxwell,Pluggy kicking the ball off the penalty spot, electronic scoreboard, Kevin Brocks back pass ( well maybe not,but Howard did'nt mind). All great memories!
But alas eventually came the K****m years ,children and having to work Saturdays( to pay for the children) and my interest falterd.I am ashamed to admit that I gave up my season ticket and picked and choose games for a few seasons.
But great times are surely just around the corner.A far better season last year than previous years have put a spring back in my step! The purchase of two season tickets could be on the cards ( my son now manages to sit and watch a whole game without distraction) Perhaps my old man now 76 (and a season ticket holder since the Headington united days) will enjoy the company of his son and grandson!
Keep up the banter, who knows I may one day reach match fitness!

Come on you yellows!

All right, I guess I'm a bit of a youngster on here (I was only 3 when you lot were at Wembley) and I've been following Oxford more and more closely over the last few years while at Uni (strange, I guess absence does make the heart grow stronger) and decided on my return to go to as many games as I could. Ended up buying a season ticket (Oxford Mail - Rightside).

I migrated over here after getting fed up of reading the crap that's posted on TIU (present company aside) and I've enjoyed the debate and banter much more as at least you lot have seen the team play this year rather than whats been on Sky to base your opinions on. Anyway Keep it up and hopefully see you guys next year.

Cheers, Pnub

Blimey - I wasn't expecting an inquisition! But then, nobody expects... :D

Right - first game v Chester 1978. 0-0. It was pants and I was hooked. Have always dabbled with season tickets, had one when we were in the top flight, and again in the mid 90's, but then was much more infrequent in my attendance during the Kassam years.

Had a ST this season along with the missus and we'll probably renew although neither of us at this stage are particularly hopeful for next year. We sit in the South Lower just behind the home dugout.

This is my first forum, chose it because there are a few familiar people on here. Know Boris and Pena from my days writing rubbish for Raging Bull (although my quill has been silent for many years now). I know who DLT is having been introduced at Mansfield last year and have seen him in the bar after a few games.

And also chose it because you don't have to wade through megabytes of drivel to find pearls of wisdom. :D

Well thanks for the offer, hopefully I've not blown my chances of being accepted based on my two posts so far (thought I'd go for safe and inoffensive, to start with anyhow!)

I've not had a season ticket since we moved to the new ground but before then I was making it to most home and away matches. I think i've seen us at about 80 grounds or so, mostly during the Denis Smith part 1 era. Since we moved, a combination of Uni for a few years, getting into golf more and more and playing football saturdays has got in the way, but I still make it to matches when I can, probably about 15 or so last season.

I've checked out TIU a few times but I agree there is a lot of shite to wade through. Used to always buy Raging Bull/Rage On which were great reads. Been reading this forum regularly for the last couple of months, coincidently when my new officed based job started!

My cousin has a Cuckoo road sign in his garage so there must have been more than one Big Dave!

Against Reading I believe. He managed to leg it away from the coppers. The crowd parted in the Beech Road to let him in. But by the time he got round the back of the stand he was too knackered to get any further and got nicked. (Well that's how I remember it - but it was a long time ago)

This is starting to sound like an alcoholics anonymous meeting (not that I've been to one).

My names Mark and I'm an Oxford United fan!

I've been hooked for over 30 years. I did manage to kick the habit a couple of times but always ended up drifting back. On each occasion one game led to another and before I knew it I was going every week. The final whistle of each game was the start of a craving that would last until the following Saturday when I could get my next fix.

I blame my mates for getting me into it in the first place. I was young and impressionable and when a mate suggested we went to an Oxford game on the bus I didn't realise what it could lead to.

I did escape for a while when I went away to Uni and thought I'd kicked the habit but my timing wasn't good. On returning three years later it was the summer of 1984. I'd watched Oxford for what seemed a lifetime in the third division with no hope of any success so how could I keep away now when we were doing so well. My life could have been so different it wasn't for that bloody Jim Smith enticing me back again.

After that the die was cast and there was no going back. What I feel really guilty about though is when my son was old enough I dragged him along to a game. At the age of 7 he was being influenced by his friends at school and started thinking he supported Man United - he even had little plastic figures of Eric Cantona and Ryan Giggs - so you see why I had to do it. Needless to say he soon became an addict too.

Thankfully he's escaped for now and gone off to Uni himself. I had hoped that this would mean that even if I was stuck with it he could escape. But bugger me if that bloke Smith isn't back again. I can see it happening all over again and when my son returns from 3 years away history will have repeated itself and we'll be climbing back up the leagues just like the 1980's. Another generation will be drawn into a half life of hope and despair at the mercy of the next fix of Oxford United.

This is a very dodgy thread.

Most of the regular members of RageOnline have been (at least electronically) together for nearly ten years on one forum or another. If nothing else, if you post incorrect data in this place you will be pulled up on it within minutes, so it’s not like TiU and you don’t end up wasting your time reading crap.

Not much to say about me, so I wont. I'll let my football skills (or lack of them) do the talking- see RF page.

1st Game 1980's against Notts County I think. Once played for Ox youth against Watfod hornets, was made captain mainly because I was huge and the other were scared!!.

Sit SSL lower right behind the dugouts so very near Shoobedoo (Row I).

I have been mainly lurcking since the IRUZM/MZURI days, once played footie against Boris (Powerhouse v Oxfam).

Season ticket always, used to do away games but not this last year.

My english is rubbish and that is why i am an accountant!!!
