Well I watched him closely too and I disagree with your conclusion.
I'll repeat - when he had decent balls played to him in the air he won most of them. His pass to set Yemi up was quality stuff. And he was not feeling 100%. I would hardly call that minimal contribution.

Duffy and Yemi are different types of player. It is like comparing chalk with cheese. I really rate Yemi but thought he had a poor first half. There were times when he lost the ball and not a murmer. But if it had been Duffy there would have been tut tutting all round. But all credit to Yemi, he stuck at it and by the end of the game had their back line very worried. When his decision making gets better he could be awesome at this level.
Duffy scored a good goal. That's all.

Sorry I don't rate him. But he has to play I guess. Cliche alert- goals win matches.

He's very immobile. Like a Thames tugboat. We played our best football of the season at Aldershot after he was replaced.

Robinson played OK when he came on yesterday.

Yemi- tremendous.

Anaclet- good.

Foster- making big difference to the binding together of the team.

Burgess - a liability. Protect Johnson? Don't make me laugh. He offered no protection to the Lord Voldemort lookalike.

Smith cocked up taking Rose off.

Supporters won us the game yesterday. The officals crumbled after the vicious slagging they took from us a after the Yemi penalty incident. The red card incident won us the game.

Well played South Stand...

Don't be sorry - it is all about opinions. Wouldn't disagree that we played our best football when we were Duffyless. But it certainly wasn't at Aldershot- or did I dream a 3-0 away win at Cambridge?

I agree with most of that.

The substitution of Rose unbalanced the midfield and Rose was closing down the Fleet midfield so quickly that we got the ball back much sooner than might otherwise have been the case.

If Duffy playing 2 or 3 neat passes and scoring a good goal is sufficient contribution for some, then I can understand why we disagree. He's like a subbuteo player, only moves when he's forced to, otherwise his feet are set in concrete, or plastic to continue the analogy.

I've said many times before, Duffy is a good finisher, in fact I'd go further to say he may well be one of the best finishers in this tin pot league, but that's about it and that's not enough.

I'm not sure I'd go along with Burgess a liability. He's not playing well and maybe needs some time in the reserves to get his confidence back.

Foster has made a huge difference to the team. Way exceeding my expectations of him. I'm looking forward to when Jim Smith sees the light and plays him with Pettefer in the middle.

Corcoran (despite his first few minutes from hell) has also been a revelation and has helped to return our back line to the standard pre-Wilmott's injury.

We are still desperate for a left back though.

This may be an unpopular view, but I'd rather have an immobile Duffy, who happens to be in the right place at the right time (not by coinsidence i might add), than Yemi who should have had a a hat-trick Saturday. Yes he gets into great positions, but if he can't take them then it doesn't matter.

I'd rather have someone who gets and takes one chance than someone who creates 4 or 5, but can't do anything with them. Without Duffy on the pitch we wouldn't have scored. Yemi could have spent all day going one-on-one with there keeper and not made the right descision.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big Duffy fan and I am a Yemi fan as i think he creates so much, but until he starts making the right descisions and taking the chances he creates, we have to have Duffy on the pitch.

Its a fair comment HP, though in fairness to Yemi (and I haven't checked for absolute certainty), I suspect penalties aside, he's scored in as many games as Duffy.

I think that Yemi is under instruction to pass whenever he gets in front of goal. Look at Jim the next time it happens, he stands there and applauds.

Yemi has scored in six seperate games. Duffy has scored from open play in ten matches. Not quite sure what the point of this fact is, though.

We can all agree though that Duffy and Yemi are our best combination, for all their faults?

Duffy: Pros: scores goals, takes mean penalty, gets opponents sent off, reasonable in air, good lays offs when he can be bothered. Cons: immobile for no discernable reason other than laziness, comes accross moody, work ethic.

Yemi: Pros: does the running of three men, very fast, gets in goal scoring positions, wins penalties, scares defenders. Cons: Occasionally wild finishing.

Robinson: Pros: Is big and physical. Erm... Cons: Immobile, rarely threatens to score.

Bash: pros: &quotintelligent link play&quot or so I'm told. Invokes homo-erotic fantasies amongst many Oxford Mail forumites. Cons: Slow, lacks physical presence, hasn't scored since september. Injured (often), heart is elsewhere.

Grebis: Pros: Willigness. Cons: Has shown little else so far.

Beechers: pros: I haven't seen enough of him. Looks good in training. Cons: inexperience, Jim will never pick him. Curiously though, highly rated by his teammates.

With a Duffy/Odubade combo, they're covering all bases. There's mobility, strength, pace, finishing, winning penalties, taking penalties. I'd love both players to have all of the above assets, but if they did, the chances are we wouldn't be playing for us.

Next two questions.

How many starts has Duffers made compared with Yemi.

And how many of Duffers goals are created from Yemi assists or Yemi penalties won?

Doesn't change the facts that currently Duffers and Yemi should both start for us.

Yemi has scored 7 goals from memory. I don't remember him scoring twice in one game this season. Duffy has scored 20 of which I think 9 were penalties, a hat trick in one game and possibly a brace in another, which means he has scored in 8 different games from open play. This is all from memory so its probably nonsense but I'm going to key it in anyway. :!:

The point of that stat is that Yemi isn't that far behind Duffy as a finisher, whereas somenoe earlier suggested that Yemi was a significantly worse finisher (or words to that effect).

Yemi scored twice at Cambridge.

Duffy has scored from the spot and from open play in the same game (Burton), has scored a brace of pens in one game (Southport). Believe me, I counted!

I would contend that the main difference between Yemi and Duffy is that Yemi creates his own chances, and finishes maybe a third of them, whereas Duffy has to have chances created for him, but with a significantly higher success rate.

As YF Dan suggests, a Yemi/Duffy partnership is probably the best that the club has to offer at the mo, although I would like to see Yemi and Grebo together for a half, just to see what their combined pace might wreak.

I don't quite get the relavence of Duffy scoring a hat-trick in one game and a brace in another. They were still goals from open play, they were still important to the result of the game and they are just as important as games where only one goal was scored.
My original point was that in my opinion Duffy would have put at least one of the chances Yemi had away hence finishing off the game (and the fact he had all ready scored wouldn't mean that it would have counted for less). This is of course irrelivent as Duffy wouldn't have got in those positions in the first place, but the chance he got, he finished.

Duffy/Jemson

Post by Geoff »

Jemson (during his time with us) makes Duffy look like a workaholic! For all his lack of mobility I would rather have Duffy every time. Also, as someone pointed out, Jemson's attitude to his team mates was abysmal and must have had an unsettling impact in the dressing room. Would Jemmo have been here at the same time as Gilly? I wonder which he would rather play with?

i make it that duffy's had 30 starts, 1 sub appearance. odubade's had 13 starts, 24 sub appearances.

i also make it that 5 of duffy's goals that were assisted by odubade (burton away 1 || pen., southport home pen., stevenage away, grays away pen.) - although i did end up one goal short for duffy, but i'm not going back to check all that lot again...
