Ticket discounts for BMW workers - cryptic clue
Ticket discounts for BMW workers - cryptic clue
Over on TIU2, a thread was started saying "Just to make anyone aware that doesnt know,BMW workers can purchase discounted tickets for the remainder of the season.I believe you can purchase a maximum of two and the price for the east stand is £12.00 per adult."
After a bit of a kerfuffle about 'what have BMW done for us?', the following was posted a few weeks ago...
"I've dugout a bit of information and I think you'll find that Mini will be spending a bit of money at OUFC..hope you are sitting comfortably"

I note that we're using their facilities for all our training needs these days too.
Not a bad idea to work closely with one of the biggest, most iconic companies in the local area, I'd have thought. Even if those dugout seats look ridiculous. Could this be the start of other joint ventures I wonder? Perhaps pertaining to the stadium? Just (wishfully) thinking aloud...

I can't see the problem with this scheme (if it is true), apart from a single aspect, which is the same flat level ticket costs throughout the ground.
Provided the same seat offered to a BMW employee is always more than a ST holder would have to pay, I think it is a good idea.

There seem to be a few things to discuss
1 - Is it fair that BMW workers get a discount?
2 - Are we pleased about the yellow and blue bucket seats in the dugouts, and does anyone think there may be cause for cautious optimism of further links with BMW/Mini? (the YP interview with Kelvin is worth listening to, he seems to imply they won't be major investors / sponsors)

Re:
If there is no major investment / sponsorship then this is ridiculously one way. The publicity gained far outweighs the cost of a few seats & they get to say to their employees - here you go boys and girls you can go and watch OUFC for a few quid less every game than those that have been loyally following them and coughing up full whack for years and years. Of course there will be some loyalists who will now benefit. Fair enough. But - "brand new customers only" - provided you work at BMW ??"slappy" wrote: (the YP interview with Kelvin is worth listening to, he seems to imply they won't be major investors / sponsors)
There are plenty of other companies / institutions / individuals around Oxford who could do more but don't. Didn't we play at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Stadium last week? Apart from allowing us to train on college pitches and providing Dr Ceri Evans, what has the University ever done for us?
There seems to be a bit more of a tie-up with BMW now with the training ground at Horspath, putting in portakabin offices there, various age groups based at the same place. If BMW apprentices (or whoever) are given a project of manufacturing and upholstering the seats, welding onto frames for the dugouts, then that seems good news to me.
As for discounted tickets, perhaps it is a promo as thanks for the training ground. I guess shift work means the workers are less likely to get season tickets so this perhaps means people come who might otherwise not. Other clubs do promos for the armed forces for instance (Aldershot, Hereford). Don't all club 'sponsors' get freebie tickets of some sort to dish out?

As I said above, provided the ST holders are not undercut, I don't see the problem.
Would I rather the club sell extra seats for £12 each that they might otherwise not do? Of course I would. It seems to me to be a good thing, given the proviso I have already referred to.
Let's not get this out of proportion, we are talking of a benefit for BMW workers (who let's face it are not going to be the highest paid workers in the county) of just £4 per extra ticket sold.
Building commercial relationships takes time. The club gives a bit in a small ticket discount, the sponsor gives a bit in terms of probably £10k worth of dugout seats. And so on to the next stage. If we want BMW support, perhaps in stadium naming rights or helping finance a 4th stand, then like it or not, you do have to hold your hands out and say please. Commercial sponsorship does not come easy, especially in difficult economic times.
Let us also not forget that pre-Kelvin it was pretty clear that work on such partnerships was badly lacking and demandng and intransigent in approach. What we have now is hopefully a small step towards a longer term partnership, which just might result in something bigger in the future.

Re:
Good point and after some reflection I agree snake - it is a token gesture really and the press given to it was probably way over the top."Snake" wrote:The BMW group make 1.5 million cars a year and the mini plant has been on the club's doorstep for years. Eventually we get from them...
A few car seats.
Even that Barber shop in Bicester has put more into the club. BMW should be ashamed of themselves.
However if they are investing with the club in new training facilities
at the Mini Plant then that is good I suppose.
