I feel that my report might have been misunderstood, and that's undoubtedly my fault as writer. I didn't mean for people to infer that I thought we had thrown away the chances of winning the league. I meant to imply that it was that sort of late collapse, preceded by the sitting-back defensive mentality, that leads to the throwing away of the league, and that's what we saw (hence my references to it) four seasons ago.

I am still fairly confident that Wilder has the ability to turn this around and change the mentality of the players (although I don't think his defensive substitutions helped on Tuesday) and I remain reasonably bullish that we will go up automatically (although an honourable 1-0 defeat to Kidderminster on Saturday-week will help).

If it was as easy as , hey let's all be optimistic and we'll go up - then up we'd go. But so would every other club too.
The evidence before us in recent weeks has been a bit worrying but that does not mean that i have given up hope of winning this league by any means. I do however believe that the chances of doing so are somewhat less than they had been pre Christmas.
As for the fans doing their bit - they did their bit last night and we still lost. Luton fans did their bit too.
no, of course not, and nor do i think people should pass over problems in the way the team's playing on a forum. but when it starts to transfer to the terraces, as it has in recent weeks, it makes things harder for the team.

the key difference for me between this season and others where we collapsed after christmas is that i don't think we're reliant on a particular system of playing, and we're still creating chances.

a positive atmosphere for the duration of our games might not get Us promoted, but i do think it can contribute. of course the chances of Us going up automatically are less than they were before christmas - our form's dipped, and several of our rivals have had a great run. but we're still in a terrific position if we can find some good form again.

Sorry I don't buy this &quotatmosphere from the terraces is doing the team down.&quot

That implies that the players rely on a positive atmosphere from the crowd to bring their play up to standard. The players performances should be up to standard from the start without relying on the crowd to lift them to an acceptable level.

Any benefit from the crowd should be to boost the team beyond their normal capabilities, but even that is only a small effect.

There is far too much emphasis, being placed on crowd effect on this forum as an excuse to mask poor performances from the players and manager, who is apparently untouchable.

Wilder needs to take responsibility and accept that he hasn't done so well in the last couple of months, with his tinkering, use of poor systems, and childlike tantrum omission of players that are prepared to stand up to him.

The players need to get their arses in gear and start performing irrelevant of what is going on around them.

We have the best manager, and best players, and best facilities, and biggest crowds, but that's useless if those involved don't all perform at the same time.

GY = nail on head.

like I said upthread, why should my optimism come before the team's performance?

I'm sure it's different behind closed doors, but I wish Wilder wouldn't come out and praise the players when they haven't been good enough. Fans aren't stupid, they know what they saw.

I'm normally the upbeat and optimistic one, but even after sleeping on it 3 times I'm still bloody annoyed. It doesn't help working in an office with quite a few Luton fans in it (as well as a bunch of Premiership turds waffling on about their £2bn striker being useless or whatever)

One of my earliest and most cherished memories is going to the Manor with my granddad. Even though I live miles away, I go to every match I can, listen to the radio when I can't, and look for the results every weekend.

But my local non-league club is about 200 yards down the road, and my kids have never been to a football match. Rather than pinning my feelings to a team that doesn't seem to care about them, why don't I give the kids their own memories to cherish?

If we lose to Histon, I think I'll go the way of the Peña......

I guess both statements are true. But the nervy crowd atmosphere v Kidderminster simply did not help. And we had that atmosphere from the start of the game!

Just after 3 straight wins as well.
My point is that it's a vicious circle - and we're dead in the middle of it while York and Stevenage look on from the outside.

If our poor performances can be put down to the crowd being edgy how do we explain poor performances when big numbers have turned out and really got behind the team? Last game of last season. Too much expectation / pressure? If we all knew how to react to ensure the max performance from our boys then we'd behave accordingly wouldn't we? Not simple though is it. No magic formula.

no, sure, and this is an old conversation we've done many times. but my point is there is some correlation, and this season is too valuable not to try.

Are you sure there's a correlation? how many times have we gone away from big games thinking that performance has reassured the extra floating supporters that they were right all along. We have a definite knack of shooting ourselves in the foot.

But not today. That has made me feel a whole lot better.

I'm over Tuesday now.

Tuesday is a major game as well considering how well R&ampD are playing at the moment.

Roll on Tuesday, I can't wait.
