Chris Wilder joint favourite......
Re:
How football works:
1) Manager on short term contract, who has had a strong finish to season, wishes to cash in on success and popularity. So makes it known that he would like to be associated with another available job. A call to said club, its local newspaper, or just a rumour posted on forum, does trick.
2) Lazy local newspaper journalists pick up on rumour, turn it into a "story".
3) Word spreads that said manager is being considered for the post, even though in reality he's not. Fans panic, bombard forums with "give him a long contract" messages.
4) Chairman, eager to keep fans on side, responds with 3 year deal.
5) Season starts badly, fans turn on manager, bombard forums with "Manager out" messages come Christmas
6) Chairman sacks manager, pays off 2 1/2 year contract.

All very true, Dan. However, in the case of Wilder we’ve only reached step 3 so far.
If Wilder has any sense (and I think we’d mostly agree he has) then if I were him I’d wait a while before going ahead with step 4.
In particular because step 4 is not just about how much Wilder gets paid, but how much budget he’s got to work with in the next year or two. If it’s significantly less than Patto and Jim recently wasted then I’d understand him keeping his current rolling contract going and his options open for a properly funded job higher up the football pyramid.

But with so many of the clubs at the base of League 2 struggling financially, there would seem to be at least some sense in keeping costs under control as it seems likely that there will always be one or two sides starting on -10 for the next few seasons.
Not good for attracting a big manager maybe, but good for keeping them up

I was surprised how long it took them to get this out and how slow the OM were on this. It was on Rad Ox at 7:30 this morning."A-Ro" wrote:I think his odds may have just bombed
