PLAYERS WE NEED TO GET RID O F AND QUICK

Post by STEVE F » Thu Jan 22, 2015 12:37 am

I AM NOW PISSED OFF ENOUGH TO START TO TELL THE TRUTH AND SOME FANS WILL NOT LIKE WHAT I HAVE TO SAY.
I CAN NOW NAME AT LEAST FOUR PLAYERS WHO ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY LEAGUE FOOTBALL FOR OXFORD UNITED AND NEED TO GO , RYAN CLARK ANDY WHING JAKE WRIGHT AND DANNY ROSE , I AM SICK OF FANS WHO APPEAR TO THINK WE HAVE A DECENT SET OF PLAYERS WHEN IT IS PLAIN TO SEE THAT THESE FOUR PLAYERS ARE CLEARLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH . TIME TO FIND THE MONEY TO GET SOME DECENT PLAYERS INTO THE CLUB, NO GOOD TO BLAME THE MANAGER WHEN THE PLAYERS HE HAS TO PICK FROM ARE NOT UP TO THE JOB . ANY MANAGER IN THAT SITUATION IS WORKING WITH BOTH HANDS TIED BEHIND HIS BACK , WITH GOOD PLAYERS HE HAS A CHANCE WITHOUT THEM HE HAS NO CHANCE , NEVER MIND SACKING THE MANAGER IF I WAS HIM I WOULD RESIGN . AND I FOR ONE WOULD NOT BLAME HIM , OXFORD UNITED AT THE MOMENT HAVE A GOOD MANAGER WHO HAS TOO MANAGE WITH CRAP PLAYERS .

YEAH, AND THAT DANNY HYLTON - WHEN DID HE LAST SCORE A GOAL? GET CAMPBELL IN THE TEAM AND MAKE DUNKLEY CAPTAIN - THEY'RE THE FUTURE OF OUFC.

In fairness to STEVE F, I agree about Whing. He's had his day and is regrettably no longer up to the job. He is far too immobile for MApp's style and he gets booked too easily. Very committed player, but his distribution is also poor.

Danny Rose is a borderline case and has been out of form for a long while.

Ryan Clarke and Jake Wright though? Really? They are two of the best players in the division, let alone in our squad, let alone in our side, let alone in our first XI.

Other players who need to move on are Meades, Newey (he is back with us due to injury), Hunt (loan has not yet been made permanent), Burns & Dunkley.

I would add in Michael Collins who has not lived up to his Scunthorpe standards, and I have reservations about Campbell and Hoban albeit very early days for 2 non-league players trying to make the grade.

MApp's recruitment of players has been very very poor so far.

Personally I would not be disappointed to see MApp leave as well. I'm not in favour of changing managers frequently, but MApp has clearly taken the club backwards from Wilder's achievements.

Do we have a Thompson? I am losing track, to be honest.

Agree that Whing has had it. I don't mind Burns as an occasional impact sub.

I realise football chat is subjective but there's a lot of utter hooey on this thread (so here's my own bollox to add to it).

Clarke - so as soon as someone has a bad patch of form it's OK to start clamouring for their replacements? That would mean every team in the country entirely replacing their team every three months. The mere fact that his drop in form is so noticeable reinforces just how consistent he's been in his time at Oxford. Confidence/form is temporary, quality more permanent. He's been the best goalie we've had for years and he'd be the last I'd get rid of. I do wonder how much of an influence Hodgie had on him though.

Whing - is a very limited footballer but I believe he has his place, in a defensive midfield position in front of a back four away from home. Not in front of a back five, where you're basically handing the midfield to the opposition, or at home because he's not creative enough.

Wright - is getting some uncalled for stick. He's a decent League Two defender. If he didn't make mistakes, he wouldn't be in League Two. Everyone has a bad day at the office occasionally, I don't really hold him responsibile for Southend, it was a collective poor game exacerbated by some bloody awful management decisions.

Rose - again gets a bad rap. He does his job, quietly and effectively. Nothing flamboyant, he just passes simply and has a decent engine. Very much in the David Smith mould. We give the ball away less when he's in the team.

Meades - I don't see how anyone can pass judgement on him as he's virtually unplayed in his preferred position. He made a difference when he came on last Saturday, even if it was far too late.

Newey - well if Meades does get to play in his preferred position (ie THD gets recalled) then I probably agree it's best that he move on.

Hunt - shame he hasn't had a chance to prove himself with MAPP. If we end up without a right back at the end of the window, then he should get another chance. I get really sick of managers playing players out of position.

Burns - would look better in a team with settled tactics. Looks like a decent winger when given half a chance. If he goes, with Potter already out the door, where is our width coming from?

Dunkley - four or five games and he's already earmarked for the door? To my eyes he looks good in the air, a bit raw but he's young and come from non-league so has a bit to learn and I would certainly give him more of a chance.

Collins - again - needs more time in his preferred position. He'd be my first choice for defensive mid at home where his greater range of passing and movement would be more useful. FWIW to take bit of the heat off Wright I'd make him captain as well.

Judging Campbell (I presume that's who "Thompson" really is) and Hoban from a couple of games in an unsettled side is madness.

Where I am leaning towards change however, is management. I love the passing football, but bloody hell it's so naive. We have probably the best squad we've had since getting back into the league, but defensively they are a complete shambles, the formations don't work, and mentally the team is fragile at best. This isn't - generally - the players' fault, it's the manager/coaching team. Playing people in their favoured positions would be a start (THD - full back not wing back; Collins - Defensive mid, not attacking mid; Hylton - wherever he gets his goals from etc. etc.)

I'm not keen on the prospect of changing managers - and I really want to like Appleton, but I fear we are stumbling too close to the Conference for something not to give.

I'm going to second almost much everything shoobedoo said, apart from I think that it's bordering on ridiculous that Jake Wright is a League 2 player, the guy's class, he makes occasional mistakes just like the other 7 billion of us but I wouldn't consider taking the armband from him.

And I wouldn't say this is the best squad since being back in the league, 2011/12 we had a great squad and that season was a big missed opportunity (albeit the top 3 were very strong).

What he said!

I don't mind if the team understand what they are trying to do and go down fighting - what I can't abide is a team being asked to do something outside of their capability and comprehension - because it is THAT that breeds confusion and with it a drop in confidence and the fight to make the best of a bad situation. Any team knowing and playing to what they do best has a chance of grinding out enough results to keep them well clear of the drop, but any team as disjointed and dis-spirited as ours are in no state to face a battle come the last weeks of the season.
This is why I believe that Patterson would have kept us up last time we were in this position, because he'd have kept the squad as a unit and ground out the results, whereas Lord Jim completely upset everything by bringing in 6 or 7 players no better than we had, but in the process destroyed any unity the squad had, which meant that we scored fewer points from then until the end of the season than any other club in the division (bar R&D).
I fear that the same could happen this time round unless we go back to what we know - and I think to do that we need someone else at the helm, as I dont trust MAPP to ever get the message.

Pretty much agree with Shoobedoo's assessment of players, except that I haven't seen what others seem to have in Collins - he's looked pretty average in games I've watched, on a par with Josh Ruffels. Rose is our best midfielder imo yet is hardly getting a look-in.

Burns could be a good footballer but tries too much too often - he's probably desperate to make an impact, but you can't keep trying to run through four defenders in the hope that it will come off once or twice, when you just succeed in giving the ball away the rest of the time.

Oh, and I don't 'love the passing football' either, because from what I've seen it's exactly the same passing football we had under Wilder - pass it endlessly and ponderously around the back 5 or 6 until we find trouble, then hoof it or lose it when under pressure. It's the same as it's been for years, just less effective (especially away from home where we used to be happy to soak up pressure and hit teams on the break more, but our defence isn't good enough for that these days).

I've corrected it now, I meant Campbell. John Thompson is an actor! Embarassed much!
