under-rated players

Post by dr ceri »

Easy to do best and worst... but there's plenty of good players that don't fit into either. So how about those troopers who made a difference and never got the glory? Or even those you just liked?

I'll kick off.

De Ceri himself would be a better choice, he was good but underrated.

Dave Smith - the fans couldn't stand him but he let the wing backs bomb forward and let Joey do his stuff. I was never quite sure what he did but he did it well.

I loathed the Smith Gray combo too, until I heard Smith talking to a fan after a win over QPR. He said that they'd been told to go and and kick Gavin Peacock and various other west London pretty boys all over the park, then give the ball to Joey.

The next match, I really watched them, and lo! That's exactly what they did again, and the work they put in was amazing.

Talking of Martin Gray, has anyone read the Viz autobiography? There's an amusing story in it about the then Sunderland reserve player.

Ste we are certainly onthe same wavelength.

As soon as I saw the title I thought of Christophe.

One I think whonevers get the recognition he deserves is Alan Judge.

Nobody ever mentions him in best goalie category, but I can'tremember one mistake from the guy.

Possibly Martin Aldridge. The amount of work he put in off the ball was tremendous.

I liked Remy as well.

Martin Foyle - great player.

Matt Murphy - good finisher/mercilessly slagged by the non aficionados.

Supreme arrogance Res Ox. I slagged him off plenty - so that means I'm not a true fan does it?

Ok - i accept a bit of a wind up alert. He was a lot lot better than people credited him. 55 goals from midfield. In a struggling team.

I'll go with most of these - but Murphy infuriated me no end. His bloody pointing really got to me. As if he was some tactical genius and the others should run where he told them and mark whoever Matt decided they should.

He started 196 games for us and came on 91 more - so that's a good return for a midfielder. But I recall he did very little else other than score so taking that into account it does not look that great.

If a player does little else but score I think a ratio of around 2 in 3 is acceptable.
