A few FA Cup appearances for ex-players over the weekend :-
Asa Hall scored for Torquay vs Derby [final score 2:2]
Anthony Forde played for Wrexham vs Oldham [final score 3:0]
Sam Deering got an assist for Farnborough away at Sutton United [final score 0:2]

Probably quite a few more, but those are the ones I heard about. Also puts our PJT performance against Sutton into perspective.

Got all excited this morning when I heard on the Today programme that Paul Tait is part of the interim management team at Everton - but it was the Crewe and Bristol Rovers one and not our one. Not even sure it warrants a post, but I found it interesting at least!

With Oxford not playing legitimate opposition yesterday, I went to watch Bristol City against Norwich. Mark Sykes stood out for the home side, scoring and being their main creative outlet, whilst Rob Atkinson had an accomplished game in defence, keeping Teemu Pukki in his pocket throughout.

I mention it partly for interest but also because it's an interesting counterpoint to the Oxford Mail piece the other day arguing against our model of buying good youngsters, developing them and selling them for a profit. Sykes and Atkinson are perfect examples of that model in action - both were picked up for very little, did extremely well for Us and then moved on. Sometimes that works in your favour, sometimes they might leave for nowt at the end of a contract. But give me that any day over bringing in crocks or rejects from the higher leagues after another big payday.

Quite, KE. I got quite angry reading that piece, because I thought it contained some utter drivel and questionable logic. Case in point:

"Football should never be a ‘business’ in the purest sense of the word, and I’m reluctant to agree that players should be used as assets to increase that business’ profits and make short-term gain."

Buying and selling players is a fundamental part of football. Get over it. But the idea that we are using this to make profits for short-term gain is laughable. For a club like ours, it is attempting to minimise losses, whilst offering at least some of the money for squad development.

Beyond that, of course there is rebuilding each summer, but how much more is that down to dealing with what KE refers to (all too accurately) as crocks and rejects than young players who have gone on to higher teams? If we are having to redevelop for that reason, and if we are not improving with those new recruits, maybe it is because of poor recruitment overall, with a few notable exceptions, rather than the other way around. The writer of the article names four players plus there is the picture of Roofe). There are one or two more as well. But how many more players have come and gone in that time who do not fall into that category? What is leading to the greatest need for continual redevelopment?

But what is the alternative? Trying to prevent good players from moving on? They won't come to us in the first place. Bringing young players through? We are currently doing that well, but will they stay if the right chance arises? Whitehead, Hackett, O'Dowda, Baptiste - and maybe more I cannot recall right now.

Oh - and coming back to money, just how much does that person expect any owner to pump into the club for players to get us promotion (think what Ipswich, say, have spent in the last couple of years) whilst having to cover the rent and other losses just to keep us going.
