Mitchell-King, Knight-Percival, Squire Sam Deering.
A crestfallen Patto casts the sword of office into a nearby lake, whereon an aethereal pale hand reaches up, grasps the sword and waves it forlornly. The mists part and a rustic row boat comes to carry the bloodied corpse of our hopes and dreams to a mystic isle. Under a mountain by a yew bough, King Dennis awaits the call to save Oxford and England

An old Cambridge don, tired of life, twice tries to poison himself on the morning of the match, but each time stops when he is disturbed by the sound of nearby college choirs. Cursing, he is surprised when the ghost of Robert Maxwell appears. Feeling rejuvenated by his relative youth compared to Maxwell's figure, he sets out on a walk to a nearby football game, accompanied by the ghost. They stop at a pub on the edge of Cambridge, where students, villagers and members of the armed forces are all singing a song, the lyrics of which debate the relative merits of wine and beer.
