In a separate question, I know it is illegal / against the rules of the game for players and staff involved in a match to bet on it, but are there any rules stoping, say, agents or managers betting on who will take over at a club?
Nope, they are unregulated 'caveat emptor' markets, e.g. a total mugs game
So, if I'm not wrong, a manager can accept a job at a club, set a press conference date and time for the announcement, head home, stick a grand on him becoming the next manager, tell his friends and family who all do the same, as does his agent, dog walker, local publican, pigeon fancier and postman, and none of this is illegal? In which case, I'd whack a huge amount on the latest fav for a job any time that bet comes up. No brained, surely?

All correct, except for the last bit - there are people who go around putting large bets on to shorten odds, in the hope that this will cause a rush for the market - they then clean up hedging their original bet.
Only bet on these if you are either the person getting the job, or the person giving it out.

Except that unless you can get odds from a backstreet bookie this is unlikely to work. When I bet on Martin Allen last week at 33/1 as soon as the market opened, I was only allowed to bet £10 and that was with a major bookie.

I think Betfair have stopped doing football manager markets, quite possibly at the advice of the Fraud Squad.

Nice farewell piece on JFK to start off with...
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/the ... 30322.html
Then the other news from tonight:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/26042067 - as Laudrup departs Swansea
Stan James first off the mark installing caretaker Gary Monk as favourite, from Martinez's ex No2 at Wigan Graeme Jones. Bergkamp also showing strongly *(and Phil Neville!!!!)
Other markets pretty stable at present with Ferguson (Blackpool) and O'Driscoll clear favourites
As for the U's the list has largely stabilized:
Kevin Kean (5/2), Lewis (4-6s), Beattie (6-8s), Allen (8s), Boothroyd & Tisdale (both 10s), O'Driscoll (14-16s), 20/1 Bar these

Laudrup going was no surprise. Like Wilder he left while the going was good and has an untarnished footballing reputation. Unlike Wilder's departure there is an infrastructure at the club he left that will keep calm and carry on.

I guess Flores will be relieved he's gone ...

As for Swansea do you mean Keep Quiet and Carry On? Are they going to discipline the cheat themselves?

Chico Flores has been nominated for an Oscar
A good article here on the pressures of owning a team when money and personal reputations override the ethos of a club -

Interesting turn in the odds today:
Beattie has now gone to favourite at 2s, with Lewis (4s) edging Keen (5s).
Robbie Fowler is also moving in as low as 6s with StanJames, just ahead of MArtin Allen
Tisdale and Boothroyd are drifting (10-12s) as are O'Driscoll and Nicky Law (18-20s) 25/1 Bar these
GArry Monk is odds on for Swansea, ahead of Hoddle at 4s and former Asst to MArtinez Graeme Jones at 5s. Brighton manager Oscar Garcia features for some reason, as does MArcelo Bielsa
O'Driscoll remains favourite for the Shrews at evens, with caretaker Mike Jackson at 2s, though PaddyPower have brought Saunders in to 6s - that should guarantee relegation!
The odds for Blackpool still contain Paul Hartley as second favourite at 6s, despite his appointment yesterday as Dundee manager, caretaker Barry Ferguson is massively odds on , with Coyle, Appleton and Lee Clark at a distance at 10-12/1.

Unsurprisingly the FA has upheld the red card. F#%king disgrace. How is that supposed to promote "respect"? Respect would be Webb coming on and saying "having watched the video I realise I've been fooled and wish to rescind the card". Oh but no, no chance of that, eh?

But Carroll clearly throws an arm at him in what the referee perceived to be a deliberate act of violence or recklessness. Not really sure why you think that decision should be overturned?
Graham Poll clearly doesn't.
That's not to excuse Flores at all. He should also be facing sanctions. The problem is that simulation has never been stamped down on. FAs should have the authority to issue sanctions retrospectively to players who obviously feign injury or dive. A fine and a one-match ban would stop players doing it so much. Referees need all the help they can get.

Look like the mess is getting worse for Chico Flores. Just a couple of weeks earlier he threatened the club captain with a brick in training. Now the club captain has been promoted to be the manager it will be interesting to see if he’s picked on Saturday.

Exactly right - Carrol's arm was raised up, he span viciously leading with the elbow. To pretend that he was just regaining his balance and had no idea that Flores was there is laughable. The referee saw it and decided (in no small part helped by the fact that the players had been at each other before) that it was a deliberate
attempt to strike another player. I expect his mind was made up well before Flores histrionics.
Flores was guilty of simulation, but since that's only a yellow card offence, there's no chance of retrospective action sadly. The FA could charge him with 'bringing the game into disrepute' but I think they reserve that for off-the-field offences; perhaps it's time to change that?

Beattie (7/4) and Lewis (2-3/1) clear leaders now, Keen, Fowler & Allen (8s, 8s & 9s with Paddy, higher elsewhere) next, then Tisdale 12s, Boothroyd 14s, SOD 18s... STanJames have Dave Penney at 16s, but are the only ones to even mention him....mind you they also have new Dundee manager Hartley in there as well.
Monk still odds on at Swansea, Hoddle and Jones out to 8s
Shrews and Blackpool markets are stagnant
