Just referring to this:
If Yemi had taken those penalties, I bet each one would have been scored too. I bet if Basham had, the result would have been the same.

Yes I know what you meant. I was just trying to say I would still back Basham to convert all or virtually all penalties, even given that miss. Sorry, I should have been clearer.

Does anyone know without having to do a load of research that I can't be bothered to do, how many of those pens that Duffy has converted have been &quotwon&quot by Yemi?

I'm unconvinced that makes much difference.
Err ?? Actually I think it does.

Love, him or hate him Duffer has been a penalty taker supreme to date. How many Oxford players have scored 8 consecutive pens?

No idea, but how about this…

How many sides have ever had this many penalties awarded in their favour in so few games as OUFC have this season?

Well, seeing as we get so many, it's doubly important we have someone who's pretty good at taking them.

I don't think you can argue with his scoring record (19 from 29) even if you feel the need to exclude games in which he's scored more than 1 or penalities. He's clearly our most effective striker. There's obvious improvement to be made but as a target man I think he's pretty good, I'm not sure it's his job to run the channels as well as win headers (otherwise you may as well criticise Yemi for being rubbish in the air). How many of Aldridge's goals were penalties? I know he didn't always take 'em (I can recall Trewick taking some), but I'd bet he was in double figures, maybe even 15? And all people will remember is the miss for 'pool in the FA cup final.

Talking of Wimbledon, anyone remember this game:

Hazy memories, but a mudbath, everyone's kit caked, except for JA, pristine and shining, doing absolutely nowt, not exactly &quotworking and leading the line&quot ... other than getting behind their defence, unmarked, for the equaliser in his one significant contribution.

Any sort of comparison of JA with RD is going to make me laugh really quite a lot.

There are some similarities, both good at penalties, both have a decent scoring record while at Oxford (although Duffy's isn't for as long) and both get called lazy by the supporters.

In terms of ability though, Aldridge was clearly superior.

I remember it - as a 12 year old I'd managed to persuade my entire family to stop off for this game en route back from Christmas away with the relatives in Surrey. As we were heading up the A3 at 1.30, we put on the radio, which by chance was set to Radio Oxford, and heard a faint and crackly match report of the game, which had just ended.

It would have been my Mum's one and only live game of football had we known about the early kick-off.

Funny this conversation has come round to Johnny Aldridge, as I was going to ask you (GY) whether you thought his knack of scoring more than one goal in a game, and accuracy with penalties, should detract from his impressive scoring record too.

Anyway, the comparison is perfectly valid. No-one is trying to claim that Duffy is as good as Aldridge - if he were, he wouldn't be playing in the Conference. But the goalscoring charts (at their respective levels) speak for themselves. And Aldo received considerably better service, from both wide players and strike partners, than Duffy ever has.

And as for the booing argument - if you criticise the whole team after a shocking performance, then fair enough. But if you single out Duffy for abuse, either during or after a game, then shame on you quite frankly. As you say, he's the best of what we've got, so let's get behind him, shall we?

Well yes, comparing Aldridge to Duffy is like comparing Jim Smith then to Jim Smith now .... and context is important. But Isaac picked up my implicit point about the mutterings about JA's work rate.

Well we would, because we didn't get Duffy until after we were relegated.
