If you want to become a real cryptic crossword anorak you should read Pretty Girl in Crimson Rose (8) by Sandy Balfour.

Well to be BLOODY picky Eric doesn't leave California - California leaves Eric.
Pedant!

And your clue appears to have two possible answers! Ner, ner, ner! :lol:

I've read that - excellent book. Highly recommended (although not as highly as this)

Following that logic anyone called Jim who shares a surname with somebody perceived to have legendry status could be the answer and therfore none of these can be the answer. The solver should be left in no doubt that they have the correct answer. My watchwords are always &quotWhat would Araucaria clue&quot A true legend.

Of course. My mistake. If only I'd paid more attention in my O'level Crossword!

Ian Sampson

Take drugs (l,s,d) from island to leave I,a,n

Sam (adds = ps) on.

Can't work out the first clue though, even though I know the answer!

Sam = LSD (Little Sam Deering) from island = IAN
Strong = Samson
Silent = P (though I suppose 'quiet' would have been more precise).

Anyway, looks like our current backup rightback has a bit more to do yet to be a household name in OUFC circles.....

Are you not going to bother setting the next clue or are we now officially into pre-season with more important things to talk about?
