May 10 (Evening Chronicle - Newcastle-upon-Tyne) --TALENTED young footballers could become the stars of the future - thanks to a new course.
Framwellgate School, in Durham, in partnership with The Martin Gray Football Academy, is giving youngsters the chance to study for an enhanced BTec Level 3 Extended Diploma, which specialises in coaching and elite sports skills.
And starting this September, the two-year course is believed to be the first of its kind in the city.
Former Sunderland midfielder Martin Gray said there is every chance that some of the students could go on to becoming professional footballers. He said: &quotThe course is focused on elite young footballers and their development as players will only improve whilst, just as importantly, they will receive education that will provide them with an insight into a whole range of employment sectors within sport generally.
&quotThey will be learning about areas such as the physiology, fitness, sports nutrition and sports psychology, all of which could lead to careers in professional sport.&quot Headteacher at Framwellgate School Alisdair Nicholas said: &quotWe are delighted to be working with Martin to deliver, for the first time, such an exciting course for young people from Durham and the surrounding areas.
&quotBecoming a professional footballer is very difficult and whilst it would be fantastic to see young people from Framwellgate School go on to play at that level, it will be just as rewarding for us to see them use their learning to open other doors.&quot
Gray signed as a trainee to Sunderland in 1990 and stayed with them until 1996 when he made a Pounds 100,000 transfer to Oxford United.
In 2001 Darlington agreed to end his playing contract so he could concentrate on being reserve and youth team coach on a full-time basis.
And in June 2010 he set up the football academy.
All coaches from the academy come from a football background with many being ex-professional Premier League footballers themselves.
The academy offers a range of courses, including dietary advice, sports physiotherapy or one-on-one training sessions.
To be eligible for the course, youngsters need to have achieved five GSCEs at Grade A*-C, including maths and English, or have a BTec First Diploma in sport, exercise and fitness, at Merit level.
Trials will take place on the 3G pitches at the Meadowfield Sports Centre, Durham, between 10am and noon on Saturday, May 25.

In 2006, he became joint-manager of Crawley Town after a spell at Oxford United. However, Woozley announced the following year that he was to leave Crawley and retire from professional football to take up a job with the fire service - aged 27.

The central defender then continued his non-league career with spells at Farnborough, Staines Town and Carshalton Athletic, before winning promotion into the Zamaretto Premier Divison as captain of the now defunct Windsor &amp Eton.

He joined Slough in February 2011 and has already racked up over 100 appearances for the club, scoring twice.
