A Watford education under G Taylor for sure.
Agreed. Overrated. He played for England as well!

Top of the head, without thinking this through completely:
Barron Langan, Elliott (or Roberts), Briggs, Slatter Houghton, Hebberd, Evanson, Beauchamp Aldridge, Duff ... er, Hamilton.

I don't think it would be right to include players like, say, Colin Todd, who is the finest CB we've had at the club ... but not when he was here.

Whitehead
Bardsley / Elliott / Todd / Bobby Mac
Houghton / Hebberd / Magiliton / Joey ... why not.
Aldridge / Hamilton

Picking as individuals in each position, disregarding whether the team would work together:

Phil Whitehead (actually I loved Steve Hardwick c. 1985, but I was probably too young to see the faults that others tell me he had)

Dave Langan (or Bardsley - can't agree that he was over-rated)
Matt Elliott
Gary Briggs (or Melville or Dr Ceri Evans)
Jimmy Phillips (a much better defender than Powell)

Ray Houghton (possibly Brock was a better wide player, but I really wanted to fit little Les into the team as CM, and can't leave Houghton out completely)
Les Phillips
Jim Magilton
Paul Simpson (close between him and Joey)

John Aldridge
Dean Saunders (definitely second choice striker, with plenty of other contenders breathing down his neck)

No mention of Peter Foley? A hatrick in 9 minutes against Chester in 1977 is etched on my memory. He might not be the best striker we ever had but if I was to pick a fantasy side he'd be up front alongside Aldridge.

Hebberd, Magilton, Joey and Houghton in midfield

Langan, Briggs, Elliott and Powell at the back

Roy Burton in goal

Jim Smith Mk I as manager

Ken Fish with the magic sponge.

Chairman? Who gives a fuck.

Not at all, I can remember Clarke quite clearly - scored some of the best goals I've ever seen. Two in particular stand out - the 30-yarder v Man Utd, and one v Fulham at the London Road end that he curled in from the corner of the box after beating a defender all ends up. This was pre-segregation days, and there was a Fulham old-timer stood in front of me who turned round and said something like &quotI've been watching Fulham for over 30 years, and that's the best goal I've ever seen&quot. Plus, he was Allan Clarke's brother, and as Leicester are my second club that alone makes him worthy of selection.

And Cassidy might have been slow, but I contend that he had the best moustache of any striker we've ever had.

I've got fond memories of Derek Clarke, too - but I suspect, like ResOx, that we somehow imagined that he would transform himself into Sniffer. Alan C should have had more than 19 England caps. Must have been a bit difficult having a post-picnic kick around in the Clarke family.

Well if you're going down that route, Hog, how about Matt le Tissier?

Now you're being silly! He wasn't signed, just a triallist. But having said that, what about Stuart Beavon?

Who's the most under-rated son of god that we've ever had?
