Actually, in my time, Exeter City were the team I watched most (other than Ilfracombe Town and Oxford United, of course). In fact I never made it down to Plainmoor at all, even when they played Oxford (which they only did once while I was in Devon, in the 82/83 FA Cup).

From what I have seen Ilfracombe is only just recovering from the visit of Boris.

After being very down at heel thru the 90's it is starting pickup and regenerate these days.

And still houses my favourite Curry House.

Which curry house is that, Dave? I can't recall there being any while I was there. The place was always a bit down at heel (rather than down at Hele, which is an in-joke for us Ilfracombians), not helped by the massive fire to the Arcade in 1989, but there were a number of regeneration schemes proposed, including turning the harbour into a marina and various other things, all of which looked like non-starters, from an economic point of view. I've not been down there for about nine years, so I don't know what the place is like now, but I've still got a soft spot for 'Combe. Maybe I'll do a detour en route to Exeter on NYD.

Well the Old Theatre got torn down and replaced by a new one.

The curry house was as you went out of town on the Combe Martin road.

Run by an very 'hippy' English family who lived in India for some time.

First time I went there the only Indians in the place were four customers.

It is going so up market my ancient friend sold his place in Woolacombe to move to an apartment in Ilfracombe.

I don't think the curry house was there when I left (I moved out in 89), but I'm pretty certain that I know the family involved - they used to run an excellent restaurant in Combe Martin, where I performed a few poetry readings in aid of Amnesty International, before they closed that down and opened an even better restaurant opposite the war memorial at the Torrs end of the High Street.

They were good friends, so if they're still there I'll pop in and say hi, one of these days. I'd be very interested to see what the old place is like now, and I still know quite a few people down there. I wonder if anyone has accommodation for me and the family? Hmm, interesting...
