Anya's family moved to Scotland 
in the late 1980s in order for his father to obtain a doctorate in metallurgy. He was raised in Castlemilk but spent most of his childhood in Kidlington, near Oxford, where his father taught at the university. He also has a brother who is a medical doctor.

After being released from Oxford United's centre of excellence, 
Anya joined Wycombe Wanderers' youth team. He made his full debut under then manager Tony Adams in 2004 but after making just a handful of appearances, he was released by Paul Lambert in 2007.

He then had a spell in English non-league football but in 2009 he returned to senior football with Northampton Town playing 14 times and scoring three goals.

The next season he moved to Spain to join the Glenn Hoddle Acedemy, set up to help young players released by English clubs back into football. Upon leaving he joined Sevilla and then, via Celta Vigo, ended up at Granada.

He did not appear for the first team and instead went on loan to Cadiz and then Watford last season, when the Pozzo family, who also own Granada, took over at Vicarage Road. He was signed permanently by Watford on July 22.

Defender Liam, a former student at St Lawrence Academy, Scunthorpe, and now on the books of Brigg Town, said: It's getting harder to make a career as a professional player and the job is short-lived. So I decided I had a better future with Tata Steel.
