They went bonkers.
I've got half an idea that our soon-to-be dear-old-Chris-Hargreaves went more bonkers than most, chopped Byrne down and saw red for his troubles, but that may very well be artistic license of the highest degree. Budgie himself took things too far in the very next match and got the boot against the Posh after a clogging Division 3 defender attempted to decapitate him at the knee.

On the subject of football things of which we shouldn't approve but kind-of do, did anyone else see the Stephen Hedge fan punching their own player after the Newcastle game?

Shouldn't be funny. Really really is.

No it isn't, not in a million years. And do you really believe it was a Stevenage fan?!

I certainly don't approve, not in the slightest.
As soon as I saw it on TV I said that's got to be a Newcastle fan.
With CCTV what it is these days shouldn't he be really easy to identify.
And as it is illegal to enter the field of play shouldn't one or two more get at least a warning.

Sorry, yes, that last post maybe made me look a bit of a tit. Obviously the bloke's behaviour was reprehensible.

My reaction was based more on the fact that it was reported everywhere that the guy was a Stephen Hedge fan, and that there's something bizarre about lamping one of your own team after a big cup upset.

On Baboo's point about it being illegal to enter the field of play, you are of course right. But TV companies can't have it both ways. They like to play on the drama and romance of the cup, and they're forever bringing up old clips of pitch invasions after famous victories. All of which makes it rather hypocritical to them be po-faced about similar instances now.

Sadly, that argument has been heavily undermined by that bloke's actions yesterday - the idea of a good-natured, celebratory pitch invasion is hard to reconcile with smacking someone in the face.

Internet rumours suggest the gent in question is a Luton fan, which wouldn't surprise me.

Rumours from Steven Hedge are that it was indeed a local fan and had asked for the shirt, Scott Laird told him to eff off and was punched for it. The fella is known to some on their forums and the Old Bill have put out a description of a fella in a white diesel t-shirt and a red and white Stevenage striped scarf.

This kind of thing happens in George Street or the Cowley Road in Oxford (‘blue on blue’ in OUFC terms if you like) on almost every night of the year. It’s not a football problem, just the fact that one in “x

Oh this now swings round to being slightly more humorous than it was.

The fella who walloped Scott Laird is the ex-boyfriend of scott Laird's current lady. 2 years ago The Stevenhedge player had been &quot bompelling&quot the missus of the accused. Who was and still is a hardcore sfc fan. The fella ran on the pitch, after having a number of fizzy lagers and found himself face to face with his nemesis.
