Second tier U's hosted bitter rivals Slumdon Town and triumphed 2-1 thanks to first half goals from
Kevin Francis and Phil Gilchrist - both supplied by Joey Beauchamp. George Ndah netted a
penalty midway through the second half after sub Mark Walters was upended by Simon Marsh.
This remains the last home Derby I have missed - leaving a snowy Wantage on the Good Friday
for a stag weekend in Newquay.I got the result after phoning Oxford United club call.

Minutes after the U's trumphed 1-0 at Belle Vue Doncaster, (Trevor Hebberd)
the BBC news broke the story that United and Reading were to merge to
become Thames Valley Royals.
Jim Smith would be manager, the entity would play at Didcot and
Kerry Dixon would be our number 9.
The deal, thankfully, collapsed a few weeks later.

Jim Smith's United travelled to Boston United on this Easter Monday in a must not lose game.
The day turned into a disaster as United took the wrong route to York Street
and got caught in heavy Easter traffic around Melton Mowbray and missed their
pre-match meal. To make matters worse the team had to wear Boston's away strip
and went 1 nil down after six minutes following a Turley goalkeeping error.
Alan White rolling home after Turley flapped at a free kick in the penalty area.
U's huffed and puffed and missed chance after chance before succumbing
to defeat against Steve Evans' Pilgrims. News broke moments after the final whistle
that Torquay under Ian Atkins had won at Macclesfield to put serious pressure on Oxford
with three to play. Northampton and Orient at home and Wrexham away.
U's - Turley; Ashton, Roget, Willmott, Robinson; Mansell, Quinn, Hargreaves, Brooks; N'Toya, Sabin.
Boston - Kuipers; Clarke, White, Canoville, McCann; Greaves, Ellender, Galbraith, Thomas; Dudfield, Maylett.

August 15th 1992
All change for the 1992-1993 season as the back-pass rule is brought into play:
" The back-pass rule was introduced in 1992 to discourage time-wasting and
overly defensive play after the 1990 World Cup was described as exceedingly dull, rife
with back-passing and goalkeepers holding up the ball."
The U's entertained Bristol Rovers whose goalkeeper Brian Parkin immediately
fell foul of the new law change bringing down U's David Penney after struggling to field a back-pass.
Penney netted the resultant penalty and Beauchamp put the yellows 2 nil up before the break.
Former Cambridge striker John Taylor volleyed past Keeper Paul Kee late on to bring about
a frantic finish.
U's: Kee; Smart, Evans, Melville, M.Ford; Beauchamp, Collins, L.Phillips, Penney; Cusack, Durnin
