I normally like them. But they have to be 'amateur', if you know what I mean.

In a modern stadium the chances of a Knappy 'sucking' everyone in behind are remote.

But there again I loved 'Pigbag' at Middlesboro. Even if I heard it too often.

Done well things like that add to atmosphere. As long as the fans are willing tofollow the lead.

This is becoming a trend certainly in the lower leagues . I noticed last night that Bristol City fans at the Riverside spent most of their time chanting such things as &quotAre you Rovers in disguise&quot, &quotPremiership? your having a laugh&quot and hardly anything positive to support their own team.

For our fans what's the point of chanting &quotwe hate Slumdon&quot away at somewhere like Stafford or Stevenage, or even at home for that matter? All it does is highlight the fact that we're not good enough to play them anymore.

I dug out Desmond Morris's &quotSoccer Tribe&quot to look at the analysis of Oxford chants from almost 30 years ago. Interestingly there was no category for chants specifically aimed at local rivals but there was one aimed directly at the opposition. (60 out of 251 different chants for the period studied). The most interesting facts compared to today was the number and variety of chants. On average at each Oxford game there was a massive 145 chants per game made up of an average 67 DIFFERENT chants per match! If you told that to the youth of today ........... [cut to Monty Python sketch with old men wearing flat caps]
So we used to have 67 different chants in one game.

How many can we come up with on here that are in REGULAR use, let alone all sung in the same match?

I’ll start with

1 Come on you Yellows
2 Come on Oxford
3 Yellows, Yellows
4 We hate Slumdon and we hate Slumdon
5 Stand up if you hate Slumdon
6 Na na na na na na na O-U-F-C
7 In the mixer
8 Jim Smith’s Yellow Army
9 Forever and ever, we’ll follow our team
10 My garden shed
11 You’ve never won f*** all
12 Score in a minute
13 The referee’s a w*****
14 You haven’t got a clue
15 Come in a taxi
16 Is that all you take away

Come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough.

We’ll be running round the goalie with our willies hanging out singing I’ve got a bigger one than you.

If I had the wings of a sparrow …...

Ohhh it’s a corner

Then then was the one to the theme of Streets of Laredo …… I spied a young Slumdon fan …. Can’t remember the words.

And in more recent times – “It’s just like watching Rose Hill

Let's at least dreg up some good old songs if we're going to play this game.

Personal favourites:

We'll win again, don't know where, don't know when, but I know we'll win again when Kemp is out.

Der der-der-der- der-der-der- de der der CUSACK!

He'll have a pint and he'll have a fight, David David Rush

and my one that never caught on (to the tune from the Bodyform advert)

Whooaaaaaaaaaaah Bobby Ford, Bobby Ford for U's.
