Nastiest 11

Post by Swissbloke »

Chatting at work about the Gattuso/Flamini indicents made we think of the nastiest 11 you could put together..

Both Evans and Westley would love this team.

Thoughts? Subs?

433, there aint no wingers in this team...or are there?

GK - Harald Schumacher
LB - Stuart Pearce
CB - Andoni Goikoetxea
CB - Gary Briggs
RB -Claudio Gentile
CM - Denis Wise
CM - Terry Hurlock
CM - Joey Barton
FW - El Hadj Diouf
FW - Duncan Ferguson
FW - Billy Whitehurst

I don't think Briggsy would like to be lumped in with that lot of thugs. If he finds out he will probably headbutt you........................

Briggs was not nasty. He was hard but fair (and no, I never had to play against him).

I'm old enough to remember the likes of Terry Hurlock playing for Brentford against us with none other than Chris Kamara along side him between 1980-1982.

They were filthy.

There's been a lot of press over here on the day of Kevin Thugcat's announcing retirement from the game.

Never liked him at Wolves, and since coming to Melbourne all I hear of him is when he gets sent off yet again for an ugly knee high challenge - the ultimate being two weeks ago when he put a young winger out for a season with a hack that missed by at least two time zones. A talentless worker/bully who ticks all the boxes for 'nasty'.

Likewise Roy Keane at his worst, though he could never be called talentless - it's just the Haaland incident really sticks in the throat.

I think we could probably have fun putting together a 'Hard XI' captained by Rambo to play against these hackers.

I'd put Pearce in the 'hard' XI rather than the nasty XI. Don't think you'd last 12 years as Cloughie's captain if you were a hacker.

can't think of an alternative, since ashley cole's nastiness is left at the sidelines.

Alberto Tarantini - Birmingham full-back from a couple of decades ago - archetypal South American nutter before they became fashionable....

I'd also put Robbie Savage in there, not because he's nasty but he's just about the ultimate wind-up artist and could inspire his teammates to get clogging.

Would add Noel Blake to the hardman side - remember him going up for a header near the penalty spot, nutting Steve Perryman in the back of the head hard enough to win a throw-in

Pearce bothered me too and thought about replacing him with Mr Cheryl Cole.

Anyone think of any dirty nasty wingers? Bellamy crossed my mind but was never a real winger.

What's the hardest 11 then?

Well I think there'd be little debate about the selection of Bert Trautmann in the goal, whose neck was reportedly rumoured to be angled at approximately thirty degrees to the vertical when it was fractured in the 1956 FA Cup Final, making him almost invincible diving to his right but somewhat vulnerable to crosses from the left. These days he'd've been in a halo for six weeks but that was back when men were men, and with three strokes of the magic sponge, Bert finished the game and was even fit for the Tuesday night away game at Burnley.

I'm wondering if our own dear Denis &quotNext England Manager&quot Smith deserves a mention - I'm reasonably sure he's famously played through a broken leg before.

Rambo definitely deserves to be there - he knocked stuffing out of several other so called hard-nuts of the same era, Jones V and Rougvie springing immediately to mind.

I always like to read about Frank Barson who probably merits consideration for both XIs. His exploits took place some fifty years even before a Maurice Kyle yellow card away at Brentford was deemed worthy of a grovelling apology to all supporters in the matchday rag, so you do wonder to what extent Michael Palin was involved in writing his biopic on the 'Pedia - but Barson definitely ticks all the right boxes for hard-nut/lunatic in the days pre-WWI. a) Born in Grimethorpe. Eeeehhh...'appen it's grim oop narth. b) Headed goals from outside the box. c) Seven-month suspension for a tackle. d) Refused to leave Sheffield when playing for Villa due to his business interests, invoking another suspension from the board of directors. Made captain the season after. e) Warned in the changing room by the ref before his only FA Cup win that his first foul would also be his last. f) Sent off (for the umpteenth time) in his last professional game. g) Frequently had police escorts out of the ground due to his behaviour - in the days before riots were invented.

Don't make 'em like that any more, do they..?

I would replace Wise with Keane...at least Wise never said out loud that he set out to hurt someone...

&quotI'd waited long enough. I ****ing hit him hard. The ball was there (I think). Take that you ****. And don't ever stand over me sneering about fake injuries.&quot
