Ceri Lee Evans, born in Christchurch, New Zealand, was a distinguished philosopher and a gentleman`s gentleman. A medical student at Oxford University, studied as a Rhodes Scholar, gaining a first-class honours degree in Experimental Psychology. Evans asked United for a trial, which was granted, and he was subsequently signed. He became a lynchpin of the defence. Evans was already an established New Zealand international when he arrived in Oxford, having twice won the National League with Christchurch (the Kiwi football side, not the Oxford college), and he was named Footballer of the Year in New Zealand. He was described by New Zealand defender Garry Lund as 'probably New Zealand's premier centre-back'. After playing at Marlow, Evans retired from football and became a forensic psychiatrist in Christchurch, New Zealand. 85 New Zealand caps.
