Capetown-born Arendse was a South African international goalkeeper, who signed for Oxford at the start of the 1999/2000 season, where he vied with Pål Lundin for the first-team slot. Arendse started off as first choice, but his record of just three clean sheets in 18 games meant that he was often behind Lundin in the reckoning. Arendse was a decent shot-stopper, but his kicking and general command was poor, and Oxford fans never really took to him.
