Sam is one of the smallest players to play for United`s first team, but his skill and pace more than make up for his diminutive stature. He came through the youth ranks and earned his chance thanks to some good displays on the right wing during the pre-season friendlies in 2008. Performances that earned him the prestigious Rage Online sponsorship for his debut 2008/09 season, later rescinded after he made racist remarks on Facebook about the nurses who were caring for him while he recuperated from a broken leg, received in Chris Wilder's first match at Salisbury. He spent a month on loan to Newbury in August 2009 as part of his recuperation. He set up Alfie Potter for United's winning goal in the Conference play-off final in May 2010. On 18 November 2010 he returned to Newport on loan for six weeks and on 8 February 2011 he moved to Barnet on loan until the end of the season when he joined the Bees permanently on a free transfer.
