Drove to Headington from Bletchley, aged 18, giving a lift to goalie Jack Ansell (another Bletchley lad) and stopping in Thame to pick up Ron Eele. In the summer of 1955 he joined the Army, where he stayed for three years playing football and cricket (keeping wicket for the Army team). He then went to Bedford for a year before becoming player-manager of Bletchley Town.
