Stephen John Aylott, born in Ilford, started his career at West Ham, but failed to make a first-team appearance. He was spotted by United when playing for West Ham reserves at the Manor, and the central defender turned midfielder replaced Ron Atkinson when the fat man left for Kettering. Aylott stayed with United for five seasons, but after the club was relegated to the Third Division he was forced out by budgetary constraints, and he went on to join Brentford. Two years later he left Griffin Park and went to play for Witney Town. He played for Quarry Nomads for the 1987-88 season.
