John William Aldridge was the most prolific player ever to don the Yellow shirt, scoring 90 goals in his 141 (inc 3 sub) appearances. The Liverpudlian was signed from Newport County by Jim Smith for £78,000 towards the end of the 1983/84 season, and was instrumental in the club winning the second division championship the following season, when he scored a club record 34 goals in an unstoppable partnership with Billy Hamilton.

Aldo went on to score 31 goals in the club`s first Division One season, although he failed to score an open goal in the Milk Cup Final that season. He was on 21 goals in January 1987 when Liverpool paid £750,000 for him. In September 1989 Real Sociedad paid £1 million for Aldridge, and two years later he joined Tranmere for £250,000, where he stayed as a player until May 1998, becoming their manager in April 1996. He eventually left the Merseyside club in March 2001, becoming a bit of a media pundit. While at United, Aldo won the first seven of his 69 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
