United went down 2-0 at Tranmere in the 3rd round of the Worthington Cup. Matt Murphy missed a penalty in first half injury time before Steve Yates put the home side ahead. Six minutes later a shot from Tony Grant, on loan from Peter Johnson's other club Everton, went through Arendse's hands to wrap up the tie. Paul Tait was sent off nine minutes from time for violent conduct and will be banned for three games. Whelan started the game in central defence and Tait returned to the midfield, Derek Lilley and Jamie Lambert being the players dropped from Saturday's line-up. Lilley came on to replace Anthrobus and Jamie Cook came on for Rob Folland. Another depressing match report has been written.
Darren Purse scored his first goal for Birmingham City after having given away a penalty (missed by Alan Shearer) as they beat Newcastle.
Former United goalkeeper (for a week) Bruce Grobbelaar has joined Northwich Victoria on a non-contract basis – he was previously unattached.
