Three’s a crowd – Taylor joins Oxford

Striker Ryan Taylor has become Oxford United’s third summer signing.

The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Yellows after Portsmouth decided against offering him a new contract at Fratton Park.

Taylor, who scored ten goals in 41 appearances for Pompey last season, said: “It’s an exciting move for me.

“Oxford have big plans and I have been very impressed by the set-up and by the ambition that everyone has shown.

“They proved what they can do during the second half of last season and I’m looking forward to reporting back for pre-season, getting to know the lads and being part of a successful side here.”

Standing tall at 6ft 2in, Taylor began his career at Division Two outfit Rotherham United, playing 140 games for the Millers and scoring twice in the Division Four play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

Taylor then joined Division Three champions Bristol City for an undisclosed fee, although he only managed to score two goals in 42 games for the Robins, seeing him join Portsmouth only last January on an 18-month contract.

Following the preceding arrivals of Kemar Roofe and Liam Sercombe, United head coach Michael Appleton was delighted with his third summer signing: “Ryan is another really strong addition to the squad.

“He works hard, scores goals, he leads the line really well and he is someone you know is going to make life very hard for opposition defenders.

“He was one of the best forwards in the division last season and we are delighted to have him here.”

Following the end of the 2014-15 campaign; Appleton expressed his wish to have four strikers at his disposal ahead of next season, and Taylor fits the bill after joining Patrick Hoban, Danny Hylton and James Roberts in United’s strike force.
