Scunny lingers

From the Rage Online newsdesk Tuesday, February 10th, 2004

Scunthorpe visit the KasStad tomorrow night for the rearranged game that should have taken place on January 24th, but didn’t. This is a game that Oxford really ought to win, as the Iron have a current form record that’s even worse than United’s. Oxford will want to restore some confidence after their appalling result at Orient on Saturday, and will also want to make sure that they make this game count, as a win will take them level on points with second-placed Doncaster, just three behind leaders Hull, and more significantly will take them six points clear of fourth placed Mansfield (although the Stags will have played a game fewer).

United will have Julian Alsop available for selection again, having served his five match ban, and the smart money is on the Bear going straight into the starting line-up in place of Richie Foran, who has returned to Carlisle. Alsop played for 60 minutes of a behind-closed-doors friendly against Wycombe yesterday, along with ROS Chris Hackett, Danny Brown, Lee Steele and Matt Bound. Manny Omoyinmi also featured as he was suspended for Margate’s win over Halifax last night. It is doubtful whether Ian Atkins will make any further changes to the side that lost at Orient, despite some jaded performances from the midfield and striker Steve Basham, allegedly subject of a bid by Swansea City recently, and some good displays from Mark Rawle and Steele.

Scunthorpe are likely to be unchanged from the side that was held to a 2-2 draw at home to ten-men Doncaster on Saturday, but the side that is currently 15th in the table, after qualifying for the play-offs last season, needs something to perk themselves up. Despite the Orient game Rage Online doesn’t think that Scunny will get anything from United tomorrow, and we over-confidently predict a 2-0 win for the Us. Will we never learn.

Last night former United striker Derek Lilley scored a hat-trick as Livingston won 4-0 at Edinburgh non-league side Spartans FC in the Scottish Cup 4th round. Another former United man, Joe Kinnear, is apparently currently in talks with Nottingham Forest about their managerial vacancy. Obviously Forest are not serious about wanting to stay in Division One this season.

STOP PRESS: BFJ has indeed been named as Paul Hart’s successor at Forest. Look forward to playing against him next season.
