Reserves defeated

United's reserves lost their opening match of the season, going down 1-0 to Portsmouth at Court Place Farm. The Pompey goal came from Simon Karkov in the 4th minute as the away side dominated against an inexperienced United line-up, of which only Bobby Ford is likely to be a first team regular. Up front, alongside Jefferson Louis, were two triallists: Brownlie Royce, who featured (and scored) in the win over Northampton earlier this month, and Carlisle striker Jonny Allan. Youth team 'keeper Simon Cox kept goal as Ian McCaldon was in Scotland due to a family bereavement, whilst Rob Lovegrove featured in the centre of defence.

Simon Weatherstone scored Boston's second goal as they won 2-0 at Bristol Rovers in the League Cup preliminary round last night. Boston will now face Cardiff in the first round. Ben Abbey was amongst the goals again for Woking, scoring the opener in the 19th minute in the 1-1 draw at Nuneaton. Mark Stein also scored, notching Dagenham & Redbridge's first in their 2-1 win at Gravesend & Northfleet.

The Wrexham Man of the Match award was shared between the Bury winner, Matt Robinson, and midfielder James Hunt. Dave Waterman was again awarded the Weakest Link nomination.
