In 2001 however, many of those who were writing for the fanzines ‘Rage On’ (the successor to Raging Bull) and ‘Yellow Fever’ decided to organise some pre-match kickabouts between themselves in South Park. From here, with a renewed enthusiasm the club was reborn as ‘Raging Fever’ and a match arranged against Shrewsbury fans, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Over the past five years the club has continued to grow in organisation and strength and in 2005/06 played over 30 matches, and represented OUFC at two national fans tournaments.
Raging Fever currently has a squad of 30 players of various shapes, sizes, and abilities. The purpose of the club is to enjoy the matches in which we play and, importantly, act as ambassadors for OUFC when playing against other fans’ teams and in community matches. Impeccable behaviour from each player is thus expected, and while we play competitively to win, our greater focus is on building good relationships with other supporters.
In United`s last league season we played against fans teams from Rochdale, Stockport, Bury, QPR, Northampton, Peterborough, Orient, Bristol Rovers, Rushden, Shrewsbury, and Grimsby, which shows how much fans football is played around the country each week. We have since played against Conference supporters from Burton, Grays, Weymouth, and Gravesend, as well as meeting up with old friends from York, Halifax, and others. We are members of the Independent Fans Association (IFA) which runs a league for all English and Scottish clubs, and thus the vast majority of our games are arranged with fellow IFA member clubs through this medium. The purpose of the IFA is to forge links between supporters and encourage competitive yet friendly matches. They organise an annual tournament in Leeds called Worldnet, where 64 fans teams ranging in stature from Welling United to Inter Milan and RC Lens meet to play over a long weekend.
We have met with United chairman Nick Merry to discuss a closer link with the club, and Nick very generously provided us with a spare kit. We hope to build our relationship with the club and will continue to represent OUFC to the best of our abilities.
