Chairmanship of PFA
Purkiss was elected as chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) in November 2017, succeeding Ritchie Humphreys, after a five-year spell on the management committee. He called for an independent review into the PFA and criticized numerous decisions made by the leadership, including a perceived lack of support and research into mental health issues and dementia. CEO Gordon Taylor was reported to have attempted to disbar Purkiss as chairman as he was not a contracted player at Walsall. In March 2019, it was reported that he was forced to stand down after the completion of a "full and open review" into the PFA's finances was presented at its 2019 AGM, along with its chief executive officer, Gordon Taylor and the PFA's entire management committee. However, by January 2020 both men were still in their posts, with the review still ongoing.
Given that Purkiss has been vocally critical of decisions made by Taylor (who has been trousering £2m per year from the PFA), and that Taylor is now standing down (but Purkiss isn't), I have my suspicions as to where the 'ongoing review' of finances found most of its concerns.

Michael Appleton on being sacked by Blackburn
https://www.lancs.live/sport/football/f ... h-19868380

It ends with this line "'If I was going to be a manager of any ilk, the next one was massive. It had to be the right job. As long as it was right, I was prepared to go in at any level.'" which I feel needs a part 2 of the article.

No doubt most people will have seen the news, but former Oxford legend and all-round good bloke Mickey Lewis has passed away after a short illness.

RIP, Mad Dog.

Interesting article today in the South Wales Echo about Gavin Whyte and his rediscovery of form since going on loan to Hull City. Both the Hull manager and the previous Cardiff City manager apparently felt Whyte had a tendency to operate too deeply and defensively, which I don't think was ever a problem he encountered at Oxford United where we saw him very much as an attacking option sitting behind the front two.
