Under pressure Chris Wilder gave debuts on this day to new signings
Ben Futcher, Paul Wotton and Steven MacLean for this fourth division
encounter with Rotherham at the Sheffield based Don Valley Stadium,
home of UK athletics.

Wilder had recently shipped out Mark Creighton, Dannie Bulman and
Jack Midson.

However it did not matter as the U's crashed to another defeat due to two first half goals from
the prolific Adam Le Fondre. Simon Clist pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time
but it was not enough. It was a fourth straight loss - a record that was to get worse the
following week with a home defeat to Gillingham - and Wilder was clinging to his job
by his finger tips.

U's: Clarke; Purkiss, Futcher, Worley, Tonkin; Payne, Wotton, Clist; Potter Craddock, MacLean
Subs: Constable, Green and Heslop.

Millers: Andy Warrington; Nick Fenton, Ryan Cresswell, Mark Bradley, Tom Newey; Stephen Brogan,
Danny Coid, Nicky Law, Marcus Marshall; Ryan Taylor, Adam Le Fondre

On this cold and damp Saturday afternoon United finally manage a home league victory
at the eleventh time of asking, with a 1-0 home victory over Chester.

Joe Cooke scored the winner but a club record lowest ever home attendance witnessed it
(including me). The gate was a paltry 2,526. United were really struggling and were forced
to sell star midfielder Les Taylor to Watford for a club record £100,000 fee the previous week
with Keith Cassells moving to the Manor from Vicarage Road.

Cassells was making his home debut.

On this day eleven years ago Jim Smith suffered his first Conference defeat as top of the table U's
were beaten in north west Kent by Gravesend & Northfleet FC. Onome Sodje
scored the winning goal in the 69th minute. Lacklustre United were well beaten on the day and lacked
energy on a cold, damp, grey afternoon at Stonebridge Road.

Their 18 match unbeaten run was over.

U's: Turley; Anaclet, Quinn, Willmott, Gilchrist, Brevett; Pettefer, Hargreaves, Burgess; Basham, Slabber
subs: Day, Odubade, Johnson

A 3-0 away defeat in east London on this Tuesday night to Leyton Orient, proved to be
United manager Mark Wright's last match in charge of the U's.

Wright was facing a disciplinary hearing at Grenoble Road after
allegations that he had recently racially abused a referee.
Wright claimed his position was untenable and he resigned
before the hearing. He won just 4 out of his 22 games as manager.

U's: McCaldon; Stockley, Bolland, Guyett, Hatswell; Savage, Whitehead, Thomas, Powell; Moody, Brooks
subs: Douglas, Richardson, Folland.

Unbelievably poisonous atmosphere in the away 'end' that night. All the crowd wanted Wright out, and it looked like the players did too. It seemed like everyone was goading Wright's team to get humiliated, and then got very angry with him when it happened! His position was untenable after that night anyway regardless of what was going on off the pitch with the Joe Ross affair. Happy Days!

Cash strapped United faced a mammoth pre-M25 trip to Dover FC for this first round FA Cup match
under Ian Greaves. Note; this was the old Dover FC who went bust in 1983 with Dover Athletic
formed as at the new entity shortly afterwards. United won 2-0 at the Crabble - an unusual ground
built into the side of a hill - with goals in each half from Tim Smithers and Andy Thomas.

United were drawn at Aldershot in the second round and ultimately
reached the fifth round that season.

U's: Burton; Doyle, Briggs, Shotton, Fogg; Jones, Thomas, Jeffrey, Smithers; Foley, Cassells.

Australia 20-17 in Sydney.

A top flight match at the Manor saw Bobby Ferguson's Ipswich cruise into a seemingly unassailable
3-0 lead after goals from Kevin Wilson, Mark Brennan and Jason Dozzell.
Amazingly, United fought back in the second half - attacking the London Road end - to win
4-3 thanks to an Aldridge hat-trick and a dramatic late headed winner from defender Neil Slatter.

U's: Hardwick; Langan, Slatter, Shotton, Trewick; Houghton, Phillips Hebberd, Rhoades-Brown; Aldridge, Thomas

Ipswich: Jon Hallworth; Frank Yallop, Ian Cranson, Terry Butcher, Steve McCall; Trevor Putney, Ian Atkins,
Jason Dozzell, Mark Brennan; Mich D'Avray, Kevin Wilson.

On this day ten years ago, Darren Patterson's United won a bad tempered affair 2-0 at Aggborough,
Kidderminster thanks to goals from on loan strikers Matthew Green and Ashley Barnes.

Both sides were reduced to ten men in the first half with Harriers having striker James Constable sent off
after he elbowed U's debutant James Clarke and U's midfielder Carl Pettefer was given a straight red
card for what appeared to be a fair tackle where he won the ball.

U's: Turley; Clarke, Quinn, Foster, Jeannin; Anaclet, Pettefer, Hutchinson, Trainer; Green, Odubade
subs: Barnes, Twigg, Willmott

Harriers: Scott Bevan; Marcus Bignot, Mark Creighton, Stuart Whitehead, Michael Blackwood; Russell Penn,
Simon Russell, Gavin Hurren, Andrew Ferrell; Justin Richards, James Constable
