The Magic Of The FA Cup : Port Vale AWAY

Post by OUFC4eva »

Not sure what to say about this other than it looks a winnable tie in Burslem.

Game could be played on the Sunday - Stoke City play at home on the Saturday afternoon
apparently.

We’ve only ever won four games at Vale Park - I saw the 1989 win under Brian Horton
with Mike Ford and John Durnin scoring. John Jeffers with Vale’s goal.
Ten losses and three draws make up the record in Burslem.

1983 - Port Vale 1 Oxford U 3
1989 - Port Vale 1 Oxford U 2
1990 - Port Vale 0 Oxford U 2 (League Cup)
2011 - Port Vale 1 Oxford U 2

Let’s make it five.

For a team in our position, near the top of Division 3, we would only be part of "the magic of the cup" if we were drawn away to someone like a tier 7 club or below. Otherwise it is all about getting through to the 3rd Round. This game is most certainly winnable - which makes it a good draw to me.

First thoughts were this was a horrendous draw. Then I looked at the league table and rethought.

Now just really bad.

Cons - it's not at home, it's not a new ground to visit, it's not going to be on telly, it's nowhere near Cornwall.

Pro - it's definitely winnable. Though Vale had a very decent result tonight.

And just to make this draw even more attractive, it's been moved to the Friday night!

No indication that it will be. The move is because Stoke City are at home on the Saturday. I was planning on going, but the A50 on a Friday evening is not an appetising prospect (let alone the M6 for those travelling from Oxford).

I don't see this as anything other than a poor draw.

We are expected to win, being the higher division side, so winning gains few plaudits.

Its a banana skin tie.

Its away on a Friday night necessitating a drive on some of Britain's worst roads in rush hour.

I shall be glued to the radio though.

Quiz Question - how many different goalkeepers have played for Port Vale so far this season?
