Blackpool

All roads this Saturday lead to the Fylde coast and a trip to Blackpool - the first
encounter in Lancs between the two clubs since August '99. Many U's fans will no doubt
take the chance to experience the famous " Golden Mile " by tram and to witness
the ubiquitous illuminations and the iconic Blackpool Tower during this coming weekend.

Bloomfield Road stadium has undergone a complete facelift over the past seven or eight years
and seats around 17,000. Around 2,500 can be seated in the Stan Mortensen Stand which houses
away supporters. Many 'Pool fans continue to boycott the club as a protest against the current ownership
but manager Gary Bowyer has done an outstanding job, winning promotion at Wembley in May 2017.

Before Saturday, Blackpool have the pleasure of a Tuesday night away fixture at Plymouth Argyle
whilst the U's host Bradford City. Who plans these matches ?

Played for both:

Many players have featured for both United and the Seasiders.

Among that number include Joe Rothwell (above) who had a loan spell at Bloomfield Road in 2015 and Wes Thomas.
Martin Aldridge(RIP) David Bardsley, Alex Dyer, Gary Briggs (below), Colin Greenall, John Lundstram, Paul Simpson
and Sam Slocombe have played for both too. In the 'Pool ranks currently are ex-U's Daniel Philliskirk, Kyle Vassell
and Armand Gnanduillet.

Last fixture - February 5th 2000

John Murphy's second half goal gave Blackpool at 1-0 victory over Denis Smith's
U's who were abject. The game at the Manor was played on a bitterly cold Saturday
afternoon.United managed to just avoid relegation that season.

U's: Lundin; Robinson, Watson, Whelan, Powell; Beauchamp, Tait, Fear Murphy; Lilley, Jemson

Att: 5,179

Fact: United had three players red carded at Bloomfield Road in February 1976 in a bad tempered affair.
Peter Houseman, Mick Tait and John Shuker were dismissed. At the time this was a FL record.

A desperately disappointing U's simply could not contain the Seasiders in the opening 45 minutes at
Bloomfield Road and were lucky to go in at the break just two goals down. It could have been five.
Blackpool set upon the U's from the get go and with an extra man in midfield were able to win the ball
at ease and pick passes for fun as United were opened up with ease. It was frightening to watch
as time and time again Blackpool poured forward with Vassell looking unplayable in the wide channels.
Solomon-Otabor out wide also gave the U's back line a torrid time with Ryan and Longstaff and Cooke
running the midfield.

Ex-U's loanee striker Vassell easily ragdolled Curtis Nelson before firing in brilliantly off the far post
from 25 yards - giving Eastwood no chance after just six minutes. Cooke than found himself in oceans
of space to fire in low again from 25 yards which Eastwood should have done better with.
Blackpool then missed chance after chance which kept United in the contest.
At the other end the build up was too slow and the ball could not be held up even after
Wes Thomas was subbed off for tactical reasons. Passes were not finding their targets
and Blackpool worked hard to close the U's down.

United adjusted at the break employing a 3-5-2 shape which gave them more solidity
and they improved but failed to put 'Pool keeper Allsopp under any real pressure.
Henry - who put in a creditable performance - pulled a goal back with a minute to play before
Vassell fired in an unstoppable free-kick off the post at 90+5.

United were backed in fantastic numbers with 1,632 in yellow witnessing a first half horror show.
United now have a free week to dissect this defeat and improve for Saturday with the Saddlers
of Walsall in town.

Hopefully Jonathan Obika has recovered from a slight hamstring strain.

That's a very fair reflection of the match.

It misses out a couple of points, like the second half tackle that should have been a straight red against the Blackpool player, who actually began walking off before his manager sent him back out to face the ref who bizarrely only issued a yellow.

Then there was the cheating goalie moment. Henry stopped easily short of a 50:50 ball with the keeper, but the keeper, Allsop, chose to feign injury. He should have been yellow carded, although the referee did correctly give a contested drop ball just outside the 6 yard box, which OUFC failed to convert into a chance even.

In the 2nd half OUFC were much better and arguably the best side for periods, but the first half horror show that OUFC4eva refers to really was just that, a horror show.

Henry was the only Us man to show for the full 90 minutes.

Blackpool the town was good fun though.
