I was wondering if they might use Maguire as a makeweight in the Johnson deal to help him on his way back to Scotland. I suppose we'll know by midnight ...

Which means we could be saddled with a pretty heavy compensation bill if it goes to tribunal - apparently we haven't managed to agree a sum with Argyle yet.

Quite a coup to get him though - he was thought to be going to a higher level. We now seem to have four centre backs who might all want and expect to be first choice...

£200,000 rising to £280,000 based on appearances. Considering his propensity to be crocked, this doesn't seem like very smart business.

The fee does seem high - Eales
has been bitten here but this can happen
at tribunals.

The committee got this one wrong by a factor of between 5 and 10.

IMHO they got it pretty much right. Not sure why you think a 23yo with nearly 250 first team appearances would only be worth £20-50K?

Surely it depends on whether he turns out to be any good? We haven't really seen enough to decide yet

You reckon he's worth £2m already?

Seriously though, his level of first-team experience (including club captaincy) was pretty unprecedented for his age - I'm not surprised by the sum at all. He'd been with them for a long time and there's no question they'd invested a lot in his development surely?

This is not how transfer fees work. This is the process of deciding ex post whether someone was worth what the club paid, but the fee is an ex ante sum based (usually) on what one club is willing to pay, and what the other is willing to sell for - which can themselves be based on all sorts of factors. But in this case, as others have pointed out, fixing a price for a player who even though he is still young has not only played a great many games, but captained the club - surely the committee that decided this fee were not really pulling a surprise on people. A disappointment for some, sure, but not a surprise...

The are many League 2 players with significant experience. That doesn't make them worth £200k.

The tribunal costs are supposed to be about recompensing actual costs incurred in development. I don't believe any League 2 club has ever invested £200k in any individual's development.

It's not quite as simple as that. The following is from a sports law firm:
PFCC hearings require each club to provide evidence to support their valuation of the player in question. In making its judgment the committee will take into account the costs of both clubs in operating a Football Academy or Centre of Excellence, as well as the age and playing record of the player, the length of time he was registered with his original club, the terms offered by both clubs, the status of the two clubs, the substantiated interest shown by other clubs in acquiring the registration of the player and any amounts paid by the original club to acquire the player in the first place.

U's sign Spanish striker Antonio " Toni " Martinez on loan from West Ham United
until the end of the season.

Martinez, 19, joined West Ham United from CF Valencia for GBP 2.4m
last summer.

Certainly seems to score regularly in their development squad.
