A park and ride car park will be opened up to Shrewsbury Town fans after wardens sparked fury by slapping £75 fines on more than 50 supporters’ vehicles.

Meole Brace Park and Ride, which is usually closed at night, will be opened up for supporters to park for free for the next three night games against Oxford United, Cheltenham Town and Port Vale. It will remain open until 11pm.

It comes after dozens of motorists claimed to have been targeted by over-zealous parking wardens during Monday night’s crunch clash against Crawley Town. The fans had parked on grass verges leading up to the closed park and ride service.

Councillor Keith Barrow, leader of Shropshire Council, today refuted claims the authority had been ‘pedantic’ and ‘petty’ and said they were keen to encourage as many fans as possible to get behind Town.

He said: “We want to support the club in its push for promotion, which would be fantastic for the county as a whole, not just supporters of Shrewsbury Town.
