Good to see we have started early with competition for Long at right back.

Berkoe from Wolves on a 1 year deal looks like sensible dealing.

I think he's a *left* back, who will provide potential back-up to Ruffels?

He can play on either side, which in itself is a good reason to sign him - but he has mostly played on the left in recent years. Looks like a decent addition, albeit one for the future.

Sunderland took a look at him on trial - described as a right back here and elsewhere:-

Think he is right-footed but delighted if he can play on either side!

Berkoe looks like one with potential for development. Not sure why just a 1 year deal though as that suggests less than full confidence in the signing.

An alternative interpretation is that there is uncertainty as to how players at that age will actually develop to their potential (just see how many 'next things' now play (lower) non-league football). Giving players a one-year contract could also be seen as a way of giving them the time to prove themselves - knowing that, as he said, at Oxford if he does develop, he will have opportunities for the first team squad.

If you'd told me that Sam Allardyce would be coming to Oxford United, I wouldn't have believed you!

I'm heartened by the addition so far of promising young players on their way up. They won't all succeed, and there'll be some slip-ups on the way that might even cost us points a few times. But the model is the right one for a club at our level, and it plays to KR's strengths as a coach / manager and our strengths as a club with decent youth and training infrastructure.

So is this the long term fall out from the revamp of the academy system a few years back in favour of the Cat 1 / EPL academies. They hoovered up most of the young talent, and now we are seeing those who didn't make it being released and joining L1 clubs?

A bit of a change from spotting non-league talent and hoping they make the step up?

Most of these one year contracts are one year with an option for a second giving the club scope for flexibility depending on how the player progresses.

Rob Hall has signed a further one-year deal, presumably on a lower wage. Smart business if it's dependent on appearances.

Reports have emerged today about a £2m bid from Nottingham Forest for Gavin Whyte. The report comes from the Belfast Telegraph. As far as I can tell, for now the Nottingham Post is repeating what the Telegraph has reported, rather than having any inside information from The City Ground.

£2million seems low, but I expect him to be sold either in this transfer window or the next given how well he’s done and his potential to improve yet further at a higher level.

The sale price will tel us something significant though. Where Eales was shrewd was to ensure we had enough working capital that we could sell in our own time and at top dollar. If we sell at £2m, it’ll be a further indication that Sumrith Thanakarnjamasuth doesn’t have a pot to piss in.

£2m is not imho a low bid for a player with one senior season under his belt who (if we're honest and Shrewsbury aside) has not regularly found the net and does miss a fair few chances. If we got £2m and a weighty sell-on clause, it might not be the worst deal. Also very hard to stand in a player's way if he's got the lure of Championship football at a large club who would undoubtably be increasing his wages very significantly. That said, we must have 2 years left in terms of his contract and so we could play hardball on the fee.

I'm a great fan of Whyte's and would hate to see him go but the above scenario is not unrealistic.

Meanwhile, and possibly entirely coincidentally, we are looking at an attacking winger...

Given his 17/18 record - looks to be a viable prospect. His previous relationship with KR might also have a bearing on this one....
