a word of english and Kassam said he would be taking shares in the club.

United defeated Cambridge United 2-1 with first half goals from Tommy Mooney

goal back for Cambridge.

Snow in North Hampshire caused the Saturday morning postponement of United's FA Cup
second round tie at Aldershot. The game was replayed three days later and it
finished in a 2-2 draw. Just one league match took place in December 1981 due to
freezing temperatures. The entire Christmas programme was wiped out.

Abject United bowed out of the FA Cup on this day with a heavy 0-3 second round defeat
at Home Park, Plymouth.

Many U's fans unfurled " Asprey Out " banners on the away terrace before the game had started.
Future U's manager David Kemp (above) netted for the Greens as did former United striker
John Sims. Donal Murphy netted the third. Asprey was indeed sacked the following week after another
defeat at Millwall just five days before Christmas.

U's: Burton; Briggs, Wright, Shotton, Smithers; Lythgoe, Jeffrey, Brock, Graydon; Cooke, Cassells

Plymouth: Geoff Crudgington; Brian O'Neil, Forbes Phillipson-Masters, George Foster, Chris Harrison;

On this day four years ago, a late Dave Kitson header in added time gave the U's a 2-1 win over Dagenham
and sent United to the top of League Two. Earlier Rhys Murphy had equalised on the stroke of half time
after James Constable gave Oxford a 6th minute lead. However fewer than 5,000 were in attendance at
Grenoble Road to watch Chris Wilder's U's.

U's: Clarke; Hunt, Mullins, Wright, Newey; Williams, Hall, Ruffels, Rose; Constable, Kitson

I remember that winner well, a rare decisive strike from Kitson. Four years ago! That was before we were good. That season Ryan Williams was just about the only one of our players worth watching and in some games practically played the opposition on his own. Amazing to think of how far we've come since then. Wilder has done so well since and is obviously a great manager in his way, but I'll never forget the away match at Dagenham when he played Smalley on the wing. Smalley on the wing!! Also interesting to remember that Ruffels was already a regular in that side.

I saw Deane Smalley play wide right at York that season and he was electric
for about twenty minutes !

I’ve no idea what happened to him . He was a free agent recently IIRC.
Had loads of injuries.

Ah the bizarre Diaz era. His assistant 'Horatio' was honoured with my favourite all-time song at Cambridge (a). All together now:

'We love Horatio, he gives fellatio'.

The U's travelled to Springfield Park, home of Wigan Athletic, on this day 35 years ago.
This was the first fixture between the clubs with the Latics gaining promotion to the
Football League in 1978 at the expense of Southport FC. Wigan had gained promotion
to the third division in 1981-82.

Peter Foley netted the only goal of the game for the visitors in front of 4,008 spectators.
Wigan moved to their new JJB Stadium in 1999.

U's: Butcher; Linney, Fogg, Shotton, Grant; Lawrence, Hebberd, Brock, Smithers; Foley, Vinter

A bad tempered top of the table affair boiled over with the second half sending off of U's striker Julian Alsop
at Huddersfield's Alfred McAlpine stadium. Town took the lead through Jon Stead before ten man U's
equalised with an effort from sub. Mark Rawle with 18 minute left on the clock.

There was still time for future U's midfielder Lee Fowler to see red in the last minute as United remained
in top spot under Ian Atkins.

U's: Woodman; McNiven, McCarthy, Bound, Crosby, Robinson; Whitehead, Hunt, Wanless; Alsop, Basham
subs: Ashton, Rawle, Hackett, Steele, Brown

Town: Phil Senior; Nathan Clarke, Efe Sodje, Steve Yates, Nat Brown; Anthony Lloyd, Paul Scott, Lee Fowler,
