December 1st 2012

On this day five years ago, Oxford United FC was rocked by the news that former player Mitchell Cole had passed away aged 27.
On a cold, icy, December morning the U's travelled north to face Accrington Stanley in the second round of the FA Cup.
There was late drama as Michael Raynes headed in a precise centre from Peter Leven to level the scores at 3-3
to keep United in the hat. Earlier, United went ahead through Jon-Paul Pittman. United's other goalscorer was James Constable.
Craig Lindfield, James Beattie and Lee Molyneux got the Stanley goals at a freezing Crown Ground with fewer
that 1,200 in attendance. United won the replay 2-0 in Oxford on December 18th 2012 in front of just 2,566.

U's: Clarke; Whing, Raynes, Wright, Capaldi; Potter, Cox, Leven, Rigg; Constable, Pittman
subs: Brown, Worley, Batt, Chapman, Davis, Heslop, Marsh

Conference Table toppers United were unable to beat Stevenage Borough on this day 11 years ago at Broadhall Way
despite Boro being reduced to nine men for the last thirty minutes.

Stevenage raced into a 2-0 half time advantage thanks to a Steve Morison brace. Hasim Deen saw red in the first half
and Luke Oliver was to follow after two bookable challenges on 61 minutes. Before Oliver's dismissal, the U's brought
it back to 2-1 with a Duffy goal just after the restart before Chris Hargreaves equalised on 59 mins.
United could not bag a winner and Stevenage may have nicked it themselves.

In the Boro team that day, managed by Mark Stimson, were future stars Bradley Johnson, George Boyd and Steve Morison.

U's: Turley; Anaclet, Day, Willmott, Gilchrist, Johnson; Pettefer, Hargreaves, Quinn; Burgess, Duffy

Boro:Alan Julian; Hasim Deen, John Nutter, Luke Oliver, Ronnie Henry; Adam Miller, Bradley Johnson,
Steve Guppy, Mark Beard; George Boyd, Steve Morison.

This was also the last time the Oxford Mail published its Saturday night " SportsMail " which was normally available
to buy from newsagents from around 6pm around the county.

In his post match interview after the U's defeated Ebbsfleet Utd 4-2 at Grenoble Road, Chris
Wilder provoked the ire of a section of the Oxford fanbase when he asserted that the clubs' history
was irrelevant to its current position n the league. It may have been a fair point
but glibly dismissing the clubs' proud history was too much for many.

Wilder was raging afterwards after Adam Murray was booed
by a some supporters for taking the ball into the corner, in the final minutes of this win.
United won with a brace from Alfie Potter and James Constable.
Magno Vieira and sub Scott Ginty for the Fleet.

U's: Clarke; Chapman, Perry, Creighton, Sandwith; Buman, Murray Clist, Potter, Constable, Sodje

United crashed out of the FA Cup in the second round after collapsing to a 3-2 defeat at Chester.
Phil Gray and Matt Murphy gave the U's a 2-0 lead but goals from Steve Whitehall (2)
and Paul Beesley gave the Cestrians the win. The game was remarkable for manager David Kemp's post match interview
where he threw his goalkeeper Richard Knight under a metaphorical bus. United were rooted to the bottom
of the third division at the time of this latest defeat.

A huge contingent of United fans saw Steve Biggins keep United in the FA Cup after this second round draw at Elm Park, Reading

who kept out a Trevor Senior spot kick. United won the replay 3-0 just four days later.
