I think if the club you were a fan of as a boy, and a player for as a pro, puts you on a shortlist of one, the timing is irrelevant.
I completely understand him going to Sheffield United. It was the fact that he was off discussing terms with Charlton (a club in a complete mess, and further away from his family than Northampton is) as soon as the season finished that surprised me. He and Kelvin were supposed to be thick as thieves weren't they? I wonder what changed?

Yes. Was about to post it in the 'Where are they now?' thread

Pat Hoban helped Grimsby win the Conference play-off final. He's made 12 appearances for them (without scoring, I think) so maybe he will sign for them after Appleton, presumably, lets him go.

Among Chris Wilder's many skills are his ability to work situations to his favour.

I doubt he ever was considering Charlton, who are a basket case, but there's no harm in expressing an interest to force Sheffield United's hand a little.

And fair play, it seems to have worked perfectly.

Yep I would say he has completely vindicated his decision to leave a promotion chasing team to take over one at the bottom of the table - he has got his dream job.

Although had we been a bit more focused in our last game of the season 3 years ago things may have turned out somewhat differently.

Happily things worked out very well for us in the end.

Michael Appleton is busy up in Yorkshire this Thursday, assisting with the draw for a youth football tournament.

Not yet - he is notably absent in most of the bookies listings for available jobs.

I think the perception is that he is going to stay with us for a while to repair a reputation he had acquired for not staying at clubs very long. This suits all parties, I think, as we get to keep him longer than his success for us would normally enable us to, while he gets to re-establish himself as a viable managerial prospect for the future.
If we have another good season next year however, then things may start to become a bit different
