Sad news that former United forward David Sloan has passed away aged 74.
David made a total of 189 appearances for the U's between 1968 and 1973
scoring 33 goals. He will go down in Oxford United folklore after netting
the winning goal against Sw!ndon with a powerful header in 1969, at the Manor,
in a League Cup encounter.

Sw!ndon were holders of the trophy at the time.Sloan started his career
in his native Northern Ireland with Bangor City before moving to
Scunthorpe United and later Walsall, after a four year spell at the U's.

David Sloan was my first favourite player. I think it was the Slumdon goal (and what a goal!) plus the fact that he was fast and instantly recognisable that put him ahead of the rest in my affections. His now legendary goal against Slumdon in front of a packed 18,000 at the Manor was a diving header from the edge of the London Road penalty area to win the game.
