The Orwell comment was meant a little ironically. But while we're at it I'd encourage anyone who bases their views on Orwell from reading Animal Farm in school, and possibly watched the CIA-funded cartoon with the changed ending (http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2003 ... orgeorwell) to read Homage to Catalonia. Not just a socialist, but someone prepared to die for his beliefs, while the British government were turning a blind eye to fascism in Spain. Still, whatever.

Snake - is it just possible that Mr Cameron doesn't give a fuck about Oxford United? In fact I'm a little surprised - politicians often pretend to like a local team as a way of proving that they are man of people.

One can only hope that by doing so, it puts pressure on the other two parties to respond as well. Imagine if it kick-started a process which saw all three go into the 2015 election promising to legislate on the matter. Wouldn't that be something?

Some of the petulant name-calling on here ("Socialist!", "Neo-Liberal!") is beneath those responsible and makes the House of Commons look positively sophisticated in comparison.
I am a socialist :)

I think Orwell made his feelings pretty clear in Animal Farm
And there was me thinking it was a story akin to Dr Dolittle. :-)

I didn't call anyone a socialist. I would never stoop so low.

Yeah, I don't think labels like "socialist" are all that helpful, as they can easily be deliberately misunderstood, and are often fairly ambiguous. I prefer to think of it as: there are measures that benefit the rich and powerful, and there are measures that benefit the poor and less powerful. Sometimes these two things overlap, but *when they don't* I tend to favour those that benefit the latter category rather than the former. That's how I tend to evaluate political decisions - if someone wants to make an "ism" out of it, that's up to them.

What happened to the stats section on RO that used to contain things like best/worst ever attendance/sequences etc? Can't find it.

The socialists got rid of it because it was promoting the idea that winning was better than losing.

there was no political motivation for the omission .. sadly it was down to time available versus effort required when "The Great Refresh of 2013" did come upon us ...

we still have all the code that does it, it just needs a digital boot up the backside to make it look acceptable ...

keep 'em peeled :)

Will do :-)

Used to love those all time records. How about a new bit from the drop down menu entitled “Highest number of days since a League win when the opposition still had 11 men on the field at full time?”.

While we wait for admin to restore those kind of quirky but fab historical facts to the database then that’s a kind of RO quiz question for the statos on here.

Clue, no, it's not this poor run - http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/ma ... 8;team=330

Who remembers Billy Whitehurst's "goal" on our last win in the top division - and the Swedish advertising hoardings?

No - I thought it was a Dean Saunders penalty. Enlighten me. I recall that one of our heavy defeats to Luton that season was broadcast live in various countries - including Norway I think. Presumably that was the reason for the hoardings?

27 consecutive league games without a win after that Coventry match. A familiar feeling...

Whitehurst's "goal" was disallowed...Saunders shot from the edge of the box, and Whitehurst 'cocked' it in, for use of a better term.

But he was offside and so went yet another game without scoring and in fact, never scored again for us.

It was the only game in the top division that day as it was an international weekend, (presumably Wales weren't playing given we had Saunders) and so Swedish television had no choice but to show it live. All the hoardings that day were in Swedish.

How I remember this shite, I don't know.

I think it highly likely that Pal Lundin watched that game, whilst at home, inspiring him to subsequently take a break from his porn star career for a stint at the mighty yellows.

22 games (and 7 months) since Oxford United beat a Division IV team with 11 opposition players still on the pitch at full time. Third favourites for relegation behind only Exeter and Accrington. 16-1 for promotion from the lowest division. Wilder with a W12 D9 L7 record at Northampton.

Should be an interesting fans forum in a couple of weeks time, especially the latest version of 'the five year plan'. I'll bet the word "Championship" crops up at least three times in the opening address.
