Re: Progress
I'm not sure why we were able to watch a Saturday 3pm kick-off on ifollow, but I'm not complaining as I was never going to go to Lincoln the first Saturday in January. Actually I am complaining, because we were awful. As KE identifies, full-backs are an area of concern (and/or they are left too expo...

Wombling three
That was seriously impressive. Pretty much a total performance with some absolutely scintillating football thrown in. Very minor quibbles are that we are still not quite ruthless enough in front of goal (the opener should have been our third at least), and we took our foot off the gas a little when ...

Re: the new gamesmanship
I’ve no beef with teams calling games off due to Covid, and the player welfare around it, but when it is a mix of that and injuries then I do start to wonder… esp when Charlton, as an AFC supporting friend of mine (a club who lost a huge amount of rev due to their xmas home games vs Charlton and Po...

Re: the new gamesmanship
Quite a lot of cynicism on display here. I mean, there are clearly defined guidelines about player availability now, aren't there? The fact that we don't hear the exact details of which clubs have which players unavailable probably has more to do with confidentiality of health records than attempts ...
Re: Progress
Taylor and/or Brannagan missing would give us a problem I think. Absolutely. We might have squad depth with attacking wide players, and a couple of decent keepers, but elsewhere we rely on our first XI a bit too much. I think ARG's injury has (unfortunately for him) improved our passing play, with ...

Re: Hoping history does not repeat itself
I was worried about this before kick-off but we did ok. Fleetwood being very poor helped Us out - they hardly touched the ball for the first 20 minutes, even if they scored soon after that. It's hard to tell what Trueman was like - I thought he should have done better for their goal, and his judgeme...

Re: Takeover / stadium
Where to start really? We're still owned by a collection of varyingly wealthy individuals from (or based in) the far East. It seems that the balance of ownership is changing towards those who actually have the big money, although it is not at all clear what is holding up any official announcement of...

Re: Brewers scoop
I did not hear an announcement about their Man of the Match, but if it was not their keeper there would be no justice. Hmm, not sure about that. Harry Chapman was their stand-out player for me - caused Us quite a few problems. I was also impressed with Kane Hemmings, who looked very sharp given the...

Brewers scoop
That was a surprisingly straightforward victory away at a team who sat just outside the play-off places before kick-off. My memory of the Burton games last season was that they were a team who like to play fairly open, expansive football, but just weren't as good at it as Us. So I was surprised to s...

Re: Could do better
I haven't seen as many games as you but would agree with the overall feeling. Tuesday's match against the Shrews was of pretty low quality, and while the clean sheet and victory were very welcome, we did not look convincing defensively. I did think that Sam Long improved dramatically as the game wen...

Re: It's a steel
But was it the best away day in years ((c) Oxford Mail)? Well, had I planned my trip better and factored in some time to enjoy the local beer scene, then "Probably"... One of my best ever away days (nights) was at Hillsborough in 1996 - arrive Sheffield c. 4pm, enjoy 'beer scene', celebra...

Re: They know who they are
That was fun. Fairly gung-ho attacking football, taking our chances well, and some recently goal-shy players getting on the scoresheet. We looked pretty shaky at the back though, and on another day (or against another team) might easily have conceded at least 2 or 3 goals. And our discipline was som...
Re: Shitenham
I'd normally try and get to Cheltenham, my second-nearest L1 ground this season. But on a September Saturday that's still a 7 hour round trip driving (no trains available without a stopover), and the price of a ticket made my mind up. £26 for (non-league standard) Whaddon Road? Ridiculous. I honestl...

Re: Wimbledone
Long and Ruffels too are/were pretty good defending/attacking set plays too. Yes, from what I've seen so far I'm not convinced Seddon is an upgrade on Josh Ruffels. He had to take an early booking on Saturday after being comprehensively beaten by his man, and his delivery was poor both from set pie...

Some belated reflections on Saturday's game, as no-one else has yet: We started brightly, playing the ball confidently out of defence (as we had against Charlton, the only other game I've managed to get to). However, whereas against the Addicks we remained playing attractive football throughout, her...
