O’Brien agrees new deal

Oxford United have extended the stay of defender Luke O’Brien until the end of the season. The 24-year-old left-back will remain at the Kassam Stadium until May after agreeing a contract extension.

The former Bradford City full-back was initially brought in until January, mainly to cover the absence of Liam Davis due to a long-term injury.

O’Brien has made ten appearances in all for United this season, including seven outings in the league. With Davis sustaining another hamstring injury that will keep him sidelined for a further month and a backlog of postponed games, it was important to add enough stability to United’s back four going into the busy schedule at the tail end of the season.

The ex-Bantams defender expressed his delight to be staying with the Yellows; “I’m really pleased to have signed. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Oxford. The fans are excellent and we have worked very hard as a team to get into a good position in the league. I am looking forward to playing a part and trying to carry that on.

“It is great to have everything sorted and to know that I am here for longer. My partner is expecting our second child any day now so it is nice to have that little bit of extra security for the next few months. We have a tough game at Fleetwood on Saturday so right now I am totally focused on helping the team get another three points.”
