Thomas Welsh McGarrity. Born Scotstoun. Winger. Died: Oxford 1999-03-17

A Scottish Schoolboy international, Tommy progressed to play as an amateur for Arthurlie before joining the RAF as a navigator at the beginning of the war. He returned to play at inside-forward for Morton alongside Tommy Orr, Neilly Mochan and Billy Steel. He was a member of the team that won the Championship of the Scottish B Division in 1950.

He was offered a chance to sign for Celtic but declined, at his mother's request, to avoid being caught up in sectarian rivalry. Whilst at Morton, he began to prepare for a fall-back career by training as a physiotherapist and worked at one of the first Athletics and Sports clinics in the country.

In November 1952 he joined Southampton and scored on his debut for the club in a 5-1 home win over Hull City in the 2nd Division. However it was the only time he tasted victory at the Dell as his other 4 appearances saw three defeats, a draw and no further goals from Tommy.

He retired from playing as a professional at the end of that season and moved to Oxford where he headed the Physiotherapy Geriatrics Department at the Radcliffe Hospital. He continued playing as an amateur for 11 more seasons, had one more in management and another 20 years in coaching with Oxford United.

His three sons all represented Oxford at schoolboy level and he died just a few days after having accompanied one of his sons and a grandson to Oxford's League game against Watford.
