Andrew John Burgess, born in Bozeat, was signed from Rushden & Diamonds during the January 2006 transfer window by Brian Talbot, at that time his prospective father-in-law. He dispelled accusations of nepotism by performances that showed he deserved his place in the side, although he did tend to drift out of games. He excelled when played in central midfield, and showed himself to be the creative player that United had lacked for most of that relegation season. In 2006/07, Burgess was widely regarded as being the best midfielder in the Conference. In order to free up money for wages Burge was placed on the transfer list at the end of the 06/07 season and eventually rejoined his former club Rushden & Diamonds on a free transfer.
